Talking about jobs

In English, when we want to say what job someone does, we usually use 'a' or 'an' before the job title:

My uncle is a journalist.

BUT in German you don't have to do this: it's much simpler! Just use the word for the job:

Mein Onkel ist Journalist.

The same goes for more complicated sentences:

Ich will Kellner werden.
I want to become a waiter.

Boys and girls

You may have noticed that words for male and female professions are different:

der Lehrer (male teacher)
die Lehrerin (female teacher)

Very often you just have to add 'in' to the masculine word to make the femenine version of a job.

A few notable exceptions include:

der Friseur -> die Friseuse
(this is borrowed from a French word, which is why it doesn't follow the '-in' pattern)

der Arbeitslose -> die Arbeitslose
(this is an adjective being used as a noun (literally 'an unemployed') so it takes adjective endings)

Don't worry too much about the details at this stage - just be aware that the word is different according to whether you're talking about a male or female version of that job. Both versions have been included for you in the vocabulary for this section!
