ASBO's.. Im trying to have friends. I dont have many because most are chavs but Im going to hit a real jerk and beat him up in front of everyone. I hit him in class so why not? Outside school and with everyone watching. Then Im going to fit in with everyone instead of being constantly embarrest and lonley. I never go outside and now im going to do both and have fun for the next year of total fun then back to a learning bug. The only way to have respect is to be at the top. Ive done it before so I will do it again.

The majority of my neighbours and friends were actually lovely people who had just been messed up in one way or another. Single mothers whod left bad relationships penniless. Disabled people who couldnt work ect. Ye, i guess there is more trouble in council estates. Kids can't afford to do what others are doing, like going cinema, shopping ect. Like i said before, A bottle of White lightning and A can of spray paints costs less then what most kids do on there weekends. In the Council flats i used to live in, Tagging was a way of life. We were kind of in a bit of a turf war with a richer area. They used to come to the flats and tag there names all over the place, drink alcohol on our doorsteps and cause trouble. They were using our home as a kind of free house. Coming to us and causing these problems. My brothers and sisters used to get woken up by them skateboarding around and playing knock knock ginger on our door in the middle of the night. If someone treated your home like this you'd be angry wouldn't u? So we would try our best to cover up there tags with our own... and then go fown to the rich areas and spray paint there garages.
I also lived in a council house, until my mum and dad got decent jobs, so none of what you said matters to me, because I was simply stating what it stood for, thats where the word came from, I didn't exactly make it up, so go moan at the person who did.

I know it's unfair, I got it from a website, then I looked around other websites to check, (from google).
I don't think many people realise it stands for something.

I sure didnt, i thought it was u being a meanie, Sorry aimee
That meaning is real predigist (cant spell) It all is, i mean. They dont think themselves as chavs. Every area is different but round here if u went calling people chavs cos they live in council ud really offend them. Its rude! I mean if it was the colour of ur skin u were being judged on then there would be a big uproar but it aint, its the place u live!!

    S'ok.

I don't understand why these kids who just like rebelling, are basically saying they live in a council house, when they don't, and that they are vermin, I'd like to ask them why an earth they like calling themselves a chav.

    Nice list!!

But...chav comes from Romany slang via Kent...nothing to do with Cheltehnham (although I have seen your definition and others on some websites).

The Medway Towns (Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham) in North Kent always had a big population of settled gypsies/travellers. For as long as I can remember (and I'm 40) they have called each other 'chavi' which is Romany/Didacoi for 'kid'. It just means 'mate' when they use it like this. I used to work as a labourer on a farm when I was 16 and there were a few gypsies there too. I remember the word being used loads. In the 1970s, local non Gypsy Kent people started using the word chavvie to mean townie, pikey, uncouth/uncultured/criminal person. Therefore, I was saying 'chav' 20/30 years ago and to me it is not at all a new word. Our grotty little town has been beaming with 'pride' that our slang has spread over the entire nation in a year.

It makes sense if you think about it. I come from a town that is probably most famous for chavs of anywhere...certainly anywhere in the south. And Cheltenham is pretty posh!

'Pikey' is also a slang word that has changed over time. You might not say it where you are...it's a pretty much ****ney/South eastern word. Related to the above, a pikey used to be a settled gyspy, or a half-gypsy...depending on who you ask. In some areas of the SE it still means that...but a lot of younger kids use it interchangably with chav...meaning white trash, townie etc.

What I don't know is the origin of townie. We never said it when I was a kid. I mean...most of us live in towns so it doesn't seem to make sense
