Costs an absolute fortune to get on the road so I wouldn't be looking for a brand new car / semi new car straight away.
For me, just to learn to drive it was something like this:
Provisional License: £48
Theory Test - £35 (I think, can't actually remember)
Practical Test - £47.50 x 2 (failed 1st)
40 driving lessons @ £20 = £800
So that's probably more than £1000. Then if you buy a newish car you're looking at 6-7000 to pay for that. Then you've got car insurance, which on a new car is likely to be £1800+ & assuming you can't pay it off cash then you have to take out direct debit which adds like another 20% on top, so you're looking at more than £2k for car insurance.
Then you've got car tax, which on a powerful car might be quite a bit (depending on engine size, emissions etc). THEN you've got petrol money which soon mounts up.
All of this + you'll have a massive excess that you don't take any notice of until the day you have a bump and the insurance company are demanding hundreds of pounds off you before they'll do anything for ya.
Then theres the potential that sommat could go wrong and you've gotta fork out for that unexpectedly..
Basically what I'm getting at is that unless you've got a job that pays well theres no point in relying on money from your parents that gonner be a one off (for doing your GCSEs) because when that runs out and stuff starts going wrong you're gonner be in trouble ;]
Basically get a rubbish car for your first year. I started off in a 13 year old Ford Fiesta simply because it was cheap to run and so I didn't have to rely on my parents to run it, I could run it myself. Now I've got the newest/best car in my family cos I saved up :eusa_danc
