If a time machine is switched on it would keep running until it is switched off therefore you could go back to the day it was turned on but not before then.

Why not. A few years ago (maybe a bit more than that) we thought that we would die if we traveled at over 12mph.
Now we used to be able to go at MACH 2 (Twice speed of sound) and not die, in a conchord.
