You might want to consider skipping the first book, A Game of Thrones, since the first season of the show is a completely faithful adaptation. There's very little new information gained from reading that book although there are a few allusions to who Jon's parents are which were cut from the show.
Season 2 is a different beast entirely. There are a lot of changes from the book and the showrunners have made it clear that the show is it's own thing and that viewers shouldn't be surprised for it to take it's own direction. Bearing that in mind you might want to reconsider not just reading all the books.
Besides the books are a good deal better than the show, as is true for any adaptation. You're missing out by withholding the books for the sake of the show.
