I read on a forum that Wii is an acronym for "What is it" because Nintendo decided it played so many different things [it plays SNES, NES, N64, GC games too] that they didn't know what to call it.

As far was we know Wii is the real name, as yes, it is pronunced "Wee". However, there is speculation that it's just a marketing campaign designed to get everyone excited.
