[Serena lies in a hospital bed, blood surrounds her. A doctor leans over her]

Doctor: Serena? Serena?

[Serena opens her eyes]

Serena: My baby...

Doctor: We’ve had to perform an emergency hysterectomy, I am afraid your baby died

Serena: Where’s Danny?

Doctor: Danny?

Serena: The father!

Doctor: He died too

Serena: What?

Doctor: They all died

[Serena sits bolt upright. It was just a dream and she is covered in sweat. Danny is next to her]

Danny: Hey, hey, what’s wrong?

Serena: I had a nightmare

Danny: Yeah, side effect of the tablets

Serena: Must be

Danny: How are you feeling? It was really scary

Serena: I know, i’m fine, just worried me

[Danny places his hand on Serena’s stomach]

Danny: We’re all OK

[Serena runs her hand over Danny’s bald head]

Serena: You look like an egg

[Danny looks shocked as Serena giggles]

Danny: You’ll pay for that, especially when you gain those extra pounds

Serena: Will you still love me when I’m fat?

Danny: Nope

Serena: Jerk!

[Danny laughs and kisses her on the forehead]

Danny: Big day tomorrow

Serena: Yeah

Danny: You thought about how you’re going to tell them?

Serena: Not really...

Danny: I guess there is no way to say you’re having your dying gay best friend’s baby

Serena: I guess not, no...

Danny: When are you back in hospital?

Serena: Tomorrow afternoon

Danny: Oh snap!

Serena: They said the examinations won’t take long so i’ll meet you after chemo?

Danny: It’s a date

Serena: Lovely

Danny: Goodnight

[Night turns to Day as Serena and Danny are in the kitchen]

Danny: D-day has arrived

Serena: Don’t joke, I’m terrified

Danny: You should be!

Serena: They will be here in half and hour

Danny: and I am leaving!

Serena: What?! No...

Danny: I’m not getting involved

Serena: HELLO, YOUR BABY TOO!

Danny: HELLO, NOT MY PARENTS

Serena: I hate you

Danny: I know

Serena: Could you just grab the tea?

Danny: Tea? Are you desperate to be British or something?

Serena: It’s meant to be calming

Danny: Good luck with that

[Danny grabs a bagel off a dish on the table and kisses Serena]

Danny: Smile

[Serena smiles]

Danny: I want to remember you that way

[Serena frowns and Danny laughs as he exits. Serena potters around the flat, arranging flowers and fixing cushions. There is a knock at the door. Serena opens it]

Barbara: Hello, darling

Lionel: Serena

Serena: Mom, Dad, Hi

Barbara: Are you going to let us in

[Serena laughs nervously]

Serena: Of course

[She moves out of their way and takes their coats. They sit down on the couch and Serena sits opposite them]

Serena: Tea?

[Lionel nods and Serena pours him a cup. Barbara shakes her head]

Lionel: So, why the summons?

Serena: I have news, huge news really. You both know Danny is ill right?

Barbara: Very unfortunate, yes

Serena: Well we decided that he needed some sort of legacy

Lionel: Splendid idea! I’ll be happy to donate..

Serena: No, it’s not that... we decided it might be nice if he had a child

[Lionel chokes on his tea]

Barbara: A child?

Serena: I’m going to carry his child, we’re going to have a baby

[Serena smiles contently as Lionel places his tea down. Barbara rolls her eyes]

Lionel: Are you stupid child? You’ll be left all alone! You can barely look after yourself

Barbara: He won’t be there to support you, a child needs a mother and a father

Serena: I know you have your reservations, but..

Lionel: Reservations?! It’s a daft notion

Serena: BUT... I really want this. I’m ready for a child, Daddy. You know all I ever wanted in life was a family

Lionel: But there won’t be a family, it’ll be you all alone

Serena: I would expect your support and we’d be financially OK

Lionel: Nanny’s can’t bring up children, Serena

Barbara: Your father is right, this isn’t happening

Serena: I love him and he needs this and you know what, so do I! Yes, I’ve had my problems but I don’t have anything or anyone else in this world and I want this baby and I will NOT let you take that away from me... again

Lionel: It seems you have your heart set on it

Serena: I do

Lionel: But we cannot support it

Barbara: We’re sorry

[They get up]

Serena: If you love me, you’ll support me


[As they leave, Danny enters]

Barbara: Daniel

[They leave as Serena begins to cry]

Danny: Went well then?

Serena: They refused to support me

Danny: We knew this might happen

Serena: It just isn’t fair

Danny: We can do this without them

[Danny sits next to her, his face is pale]

Serena: You don’t look well; don’t tell me you walked all the time?

Danny: I felt like a walk

Serena: Don’t over-do it Danny

Danny: Concentrate on yourself

[Danny rubs her stomach, the scene cuts to Serena doing the same in hospital as a nurse hooks her up to a drip. The drip changes to chemotherapy drugs and Danny looks really ill and a Doctor is sat with him]

Doctor: Your last scan showed more mets, the cancer is raging through you

Danny: I’m getting weaker

Doctor: I know, it’s going to be tougher

Danny: How long have I got?

Doctor: To be blunt, a month if you're lucky

Danny: If I stop the chemo?

Doctor: Weeks... you’ll deteriorate quickly...

Danny: I won’t see the birth?

Doctor: No, it’s doubtful you will see your child born

[A tear falls down Danny’s cheek]

Doctor: There is no surgical option, we’ve explored all avenues, I am really sorry Danny

Danny: OK

[The doctor pats him on the arm and leaves. Meanwhile Serena is in her bed, suddenly Lionel enters]

Serena: Daddy?

Lionel: Don’t ask me how I knew you were here, just listen

Serena: OK

Lionel: If you want this baby I will support you but..

Serena: THANK YOU

Lionel: BUT... there is one stipulation

Serena: What?

Lionel: You have to marry him

Serena: Marry Danny?

Lionel: If you get married to him I will give you my blessing

Serena: But, I don’t know how long we’ve got

Lionel: Don’t worry, it’ll all get sorted

Serena: OK, i’ll do it... I’ll marry Danny

[Lionel kisses her. As he leans back the scene cuts to a prison. A dishevelled Sarah sits in front of a lawyer]

Sarah: Did you find the tape?

Lawyer: Yes, your brother confesses everything

Sarah: I’ll get out of here?

Lawyer: I’ll present the case to the judge. He’ll charge you for obstruction to justice but with the time you’ve spent already you’ll be let free

Sarah: How soon will I be let out?

Lawyer: Next week

Sarah: I’ll be free?

Lawyer: Absolutely

[Sarah grins evilly as the Lawyer gets up the leave. Sarah continues to stare into the distance, her eyes wild]

I think the marriage will go wrong and Danny will die then Serena will give up the baby.

And thank you, i've enjoyed writing. I love the Serena/Danny dialogue when they share the bed. Fun to write something more light hearted.
