Skype? Messages? Phones? Facebook Wall? if they person is online they will talk to you, you can still go onto the persons facebook profile and see if they are online if so you can start a chat with them, simple as that. People really don't like change do they.

I use it to skive in lectures in uni, about the only time I use it to be honest, prefer phone calls.

I don't see why everyone moans about FB chat, I've never had an issue with it.
