Stan Smith and Joe Swanson are just stereotypical American alpha males. Of course there are going to be similarities between the two of them

I prefer American Dad - Roger makes the show for me, and I really just can't stand Peter and Chris in Family Guy. Stewie and Brian may be good, but I really hate the multiple times each episode that I have to hear Peter say "like that one time when I..." Also, I never want to hear another Conway Twitty song again just because the writers were too lazy to make enough material for a full episode.
If you've seen the South Park episode Cartoon Wars, it pretty much sums up my opinion of FG. Honestly any of MacFarlane's shows are lower on the list for me than Groening or Reed's work. FG is still better than the Cleveland Show though.

Does this mean that other shows are the same, such as The Simpsons and their Treehouse of Horrors where most of the time it's based on another thing (like a novel etc.) I too find myself disliking the musical episodes, just because it's not my taste, but I wouldn't say that's because the writers have a lack of material.I prefer American Dad - Roger makes the show for me, and I really just can't stand Peter and Chris in Family Guy. It's fine basing an episode off of a novel, other show, etc - there's no such thing as original material anymore, everything is just a twist of something that's already been done anyway. What isn't okay is playing the entirety of an old music video that's completely unedited from the 70's that doesn't tie into the plot at all and is just there for filler, or more likely to annoy the audience.Does this mean that other shows are the same, such as The Simpsons and their Treehouse of Horrors where most of the time it's based on another thing (like a novel etc.) I too find myself disliking the musical episodes, just because it's not my taste, but I wouldn't say that's because the writers have a lack of material.

But why should it make any difference. Saying it's a spin off or not would not change the content and it's not like Family Guy follows a serious plot anyway's where everything makes sense. If you would watch the show if it was classed as a spin off, then you must like the show and the jokes. Which makes me wonder why you can't just accept it for what it is and enjoy it as it is without thinking of Family Guy.If Seth turned round and said, yeah this is based on Joe Swanson's previous life or something then I'd accept the show. I know it's NOT a spin off because there aren't the physicalities but IF some things were different and Seth said it was a spin off THEN it would probably be more accepted.
Is that the Conway Twitty guy? I never did understand why he was in. Some episodes do have too much stuff lately that does feel a lot like filler to m.It's fine basing an episode off of a novel, other show, etc - there's no such thing as original material anymore, everything is just a twist of something that's already been done anyway. I rather Family guy as I find it is more comical and suitable for everyone!
Be careful what you wish for!
Family guy. If there wasn't family guy, there would be no American Dad as well

But we all know nothing could beat Adventure Time![]()
Family guy definitely but if American dad was on I would watch it
(sunglasses)
I'd like to see a full debate on all of the 'mainstream' animated shows instead of just these two - get a poll going with shows like Family Guy, American Dad, Cleveland Show, Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, Archer, etc. It'd make for a more interesting discussion.
