The word Chav puts people off, a distinct group of people who got the name chav dressed in the sports gear or tacky sort of dress and I guess it just got passed on to others who preferred sportswear to casual.
Most true chavs who live up to the definition are thieve's, hooligan's and just an annoyance which is why most people dislike them.
