Yeah. People assume it's all about slitting your wrists and stuff.
At least "emo" songs are mean something.
Unlike R n B which is usually about dancing or sexx.

Hmm, I think the first post of the thread indicates why the genre is nothing special.
It's the instrumental ability that also matters.
If teens get a kick out of having songs that have "meaningful" lyrics though good for them, but for me "meaningful" lyrics don't make music.

But a lot of songs with meaningful lyrics have ace instrumental too.

And that's why I don't say Rhythm and Blues is good instrumentally.
Emo is boring in the instrumental aspect of things.
The craziest thing instrumentally I have ever seen anyone in the subculture of "emo" listen to is Dillinger Escape Plan.
But as far as instrumental ability goes in emo it's pretty non-existant,
they can play their instruments but there are others who can do it much better.
If you ever see an emo music video on TV mute it and watch the band members spontaneously and carelessly throw their instruments around and jump in the air, it looks a little silly.
Also the songs are pretty throwaway.
I'll probably end up listening to very few groups in this genre just because it doesn't hold my attention long enough.
