Depends on what you consider insane. They were definitely brain washed.

I doubt he had any psychological problems at all. I assume he didn't like his life and hated everyone or whatever but as far as insanity, I very much doubt it, people overrate insanity. People are probably just saying he was insane to make things seem more humane. To think someone would dat that seems inhumane and people would be scared thinking that anyone could suddenely turn around one day and gun everyone down, knowing that he was out of his mind makes things seem better.

He was in a psychiatric institution for some time, and he was on anti-depressants. He had psychiatric problems.
