Derren Brown: Infamous. A Review.
Location: Bòird Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin
Date: March 11th 2014.After the previous tour of Svengali I wrote a review and got told off (but not really) for spoiling certain things…so this time I’m being very very careful of what I share.
I was sat in the fifth row of the beautiful theatre with my best friend of 15 years. On one side of me was a group of teenage girls who were fangirling over Derren, like I’ve done myself a number of times, their excitement was contageous. On the other side was a couple. The gentleman of the relationship looked excited but the girl he was with looked as though she was dragged along for the ride. She looked like she had no interest whatsoever. In front of me was about eight polish people and without offending I was curious to see their level of understanding because their English was not top notch, and sure enough most of Derren’s jokes went right over their heads.
The audience were excited. You could feel it in the room and as soon as Derren took to the stage in the dim lighting the room errupted in applause. 2,000 people, minus the girl to my left, who really wanted to be there.
This wanting to be present for the show changed the experience for everyone entirely. There was no mucking about or anything, when silence was needed, it was given especially because for this show there is a high level of concentration needed for a number of parts.
One thing I noticed about this show that differed from some others was that the second half was not as dark as previous shows I have seen, yet I say this in a positive way. There was no scary Svengali, no collapsing or putting plastic bags on heads. Of course there was a theme to the show which had underlying hints of morbidness but overall the tone was upbeat and enjoyable.
As with every show Derren say almost straight away that he cannot read your mind, cannot contact the dead but he says straight up that he is tricking us, yet even though we knew that he was tricking us, the audience members couldn’t help but be astonished and moved by certain things he could read about us.
Without going into detail of the specific acts and tricks, one of the reasons the show was so enjoyable was obviously because Derren is a great showman, you can see that he loves what he is doing and last night in particular he seemed to be beaming. Why is this? Because of the crowd. One of the first people asked to participate in the show was a young enough man but he was funny and just….100% irish. Like i said before, everyone wanted to be there. The people who bought tickets for last night’s show know his work and came to be amazed once again.
Others proclaimed Derren as their Hero on stage which was just lovely to see and others just laughed and enjoyed every second of this experience.
Audience participation in all of his shows are key and with the wonderful audience that was there, it was made easier for him. There was a new angle taken this show and audience participation was taken to a new level which was fascinating…but you’ll just have to go and see it to find out for yourselves!
I’m not saying the audience was so great because I was there (but of course that helps) but because when I saw Derren in 2008 for An Evening of Wonders audience members were roudy and some got more drunk during the interval than I would have liked…
It’s hard to sum up what the experience was like last night, but all went according to plan and the noise made by the crowd at the end of the show was something to be experienced. I can’t compare or rate the show to the previous shows that I’ve seen because all of his shows are different and he grows as a performer every single time that I see him. His charisma is wonderful, very little smut last night too and a ncie new hair cut….or lack thereof.
I missed the tailed suit in the second half, but sure, I can’t complain.
All round wonderful experience and if anyone has any spare tickets floating around there…feel free to pass them my way.
