More user friendly now adays and you can get some lovely looking desktops its much more customisable than windows.
Personally as my primary desktop(s) I used both Linux & Windows. I don't hate one and love the other like Linux enthusiasts because its pointless being a walking contradiction as I'm certain 99.9% of people started on a Windows based system.
I use CentOS & Ubuntu on 1 laptop & 1 PC and I have XP on my other laptop (which I generally post my desktop) and they work how I want them to work. I wouldn't touch Windows Vista with a barge pole as its alot of ........ kak!
I've used Linux for years now alongside Windows and my advice is go with which ever you think is best for you but don't be shy to give Linux a try. If you don't like one linux distribution make sure you try another. I use CentOS (similar to redhat) & Ubuntu sometimes. I'm not that much of a fan of Ubuntu however, as it's to popular nowadays so I'll be changing that soon!
There is a full list of linux distributions here:

Cheers,
Tom
P.S If there are any grammar / spelling errors I don't care lol
Also, MAC is wannabe stuff, don't use it. It's all about apples graphics, if you inspected the build up of it you would find many more exploits than Windows / Linux.
