The funny thing is, it doesn't matter if it originated from the first wave of punk it still has no resemblance to the music whatsoever.
The Pistols are only legendary just because they were accepted as the first punk band, probably of the British punk scene and The Ramones of the American.
Fact of the matter is that those bands (mainly British punk) really aren't that great, the stir they caused was great but that can't be done anymore so it deems their music useless now.
They also helped completely corrupt the mainstream music scene really, they basically made people think "wow, I can do this too!" which spawned so many punk bands that weren't even punk.
Later on Nirvana who were influenced by The Pistols also helped ruin music even more by being a big force in the grunge movement, which had no controversial messages.
Punk basically tried to kill prog rock really.
The whole Never Mind the ******** album was great, but influential in the wrong ways.
Look now we've got Green Day trying to be the next Pistols but they can't create a stir with their messages so they're pointless.
