that would involve changing the australian/new zealand flags aswell cos their flags feature the union jack..

I'd rather not see the Welsh flag featured on the Union Jack.
They are not featured on there as Wales was not part of the United Kingdom when the flag was made.

The only reason these countries care about being on it is because no one would care about them as separate countries, but they seem to want nothing to do with England when it comes to politics.
