I donno one of the achievements for the 360 version is to unlock every island, Ashley and Robbie are quite far in apparently and they haven't got that achievement so I think it's just like the old GTAs again

Nope, you have to unlock it gradually.

You start on one of the larger islands, around the size of a SA city (island minus empty bits).

Can't roll onto roof. They turn roll back around. If its wedged on its side it just stays there.
