It's useful for international messaging since my phone company charges an extra $30 a month for international texting (and even then you only get X amount to send and receive a month, and the other person needs international texting too).

I used to use it to communicate with someone in Europe to avoid expensive phone bills for texting - the one of us who discovered it just told the other person about it and to get it. You're right that it's rare you can walk upto someone in a class and say, "What's your KiK name?" but it is good if you plan on using it just to keep in touch with a select group of people.
