I can't find a clip and the episodes won't let me skip through.

Basically, how does one "give something in return" and who determines its "value"?

Edit: while I was searching, just came across this, http://www.animefreak.tv/content/ful...mist-episode-9 around 16:00 he pours a bag of coins on the ground, but then somehow makes a whole stack of gold (which turns out to be fake), but how did he make so much out of a few coins?

Ugh, it really isn't that hard to understand. Equivalent exchange is that in order for something to be created, something must be given in return. When it says this, it doesn't mean they literally give something to someone in order to make something. They just use the materials they have, break them down, re assemble and then re create them - that is how alchemy works. Only the people with Philosopher's stones can exploit the rule of equivalent exchange. In the example with making the bars of gold, he didn't make gold - he got a different substance (can't remember what) and then used the gold from the real coins to cover the fake substance to make them look like gold.

Imagine this. Here is a coin -> ||||||||||

Using alchemy, I can rearrange it to stretch it out. _____________________________

    Etc.

And in the case of bringing back their mother, they -thought- that gathering the exact components to make an average human body would be equivalent exchange for getting their mother back - but obviously it doesn't just work like that, as humans are believed to have souls - which is how Al can still be in the normal world whilst attached to a suit of armour.

Oh my... I think you have misunderstood me. When I said the rules state something must be given in return I obviously didn't mean something must be psyically given to someone. I meant something of equal value of what they're creating must be used to create it, hence the name equivalent (same value) exchange (given in return).

Robald mentioned earlier that in one of the episodes Ed created some flowers from nothing. This goes against equivalent exchange and we just wondered why Ed was able to do that.

I get the concept, maybe I'm wrong about the flowers example. I'll have to try and find which episode it was and re-watch it. I didn't actually think something had to be physically handed over, I was just trying to express my question better.

Well it's kind of hard to understand what you're trying to say. But equivalent exchange is used every time, even if it doesn't look like it.

Just seen the new One Piece opening and have to say its just plain annoying animation was good but the song just sucks >.>

Alchemy (錬金術 Renkinjutsu) is, as it is understood in the Fullmetal Alchemist series, the ancient metaphysical science/mystical art of manipulating and altering matter by using natural energy. This act is known as "Transmutation" and its sequence is usually described as:
    • (1) Comprehension - Understanding the inherent structure and properties of the atomic or molecular makeup of a particular material to be transmuted, including the flow and balance of potential and kinetic energy within.

    • (2) Deconstruction - Using energy to break down the physical structure of the identified material into a more malleable state so as to be easily reshaped into a new form.

    • (3) Reconstruction - Continuing the flow of energy so as to reform the material into a new shape.
