Hope the title didn't fool you
I actually found it quite surprising we have a higher amount than countries such as Sweden and Holland. As always, people should be elected based on merit not race/sex/sexuality etc. but this is mildly impressive. The House of Commons has more gay MPs than any other parliament in the world, it has been found.
There are now 32 openly gay, lesbian and bisexual MPs - far higher than in Sweden and Holland, countries known for having a liberal attitude to gay rights.
The number is up from 26 in the last parliament but means just under five per cent of all members are gay, still below the national average.
According to analysis by the political magazine New Statesman 13 are Labour MPs, 12 are Conservatives and seven represent the SNP. However all four gay and bisexual Liberal Democrat MPs lost their seats.
A total of 155 gay candidates stood at this year’s election, the magazine found. The Tories stood more gay candidates than any other party.
It also was found that the SNP parliamentary party is now 12.5 per cent gay, lesbian and bisexual – the highest proportion of any party in the world.
