the charger for my laptop (dont know the exact model but its a compaq widescreen) has started to split at the top and it only charges if you turn it in certain directions - such a hassle.
do you get like a universal charger or should i order one especially for my laptop?

my HP one used to break all the time, i've been through like... five now.
they over heat sometimes so yeah.
I got in contact with HP and they replaced it.
(HP & Compaq are same company)

Look at the charger and see what company makes them, ring the company up give them the serial number on the charger, credit card details if the charger isn't covered on the warntey then they will send you a new one.

Same thing happened to mines - first time i got it replaced by compaq.
Second time i just went to a local computer shop and got a universal one, i think it was like logitech or something take your old charger with you just to make sure it fits and stuff, but as said tried phone them first to get a replacmaenten ta beauté gît ma mort et ma vie

ebay works quite nicely for chargers and batteries so I would check that out I would search something like "Compaq <model number> laptop charger"
