Default Windows Live Messenger video call...

In a video call with a friend, he can hear me as I have a microphone built into my webcam, however he has a microphone built into the laptop and I can't hear him?

    Help :S

Right if he is using Windows Live Messenger too tell him when in a conversation with you to press 'Tools' then 'Audio and video setup' and the wizard will set up his microphone. If he does that successfully and his computer recognises sound when he speaks, you should hear him, if you still can't it's a problem at your end like 'mute' or low volume. Most probably his problem though,

I can now hear him, however it appears to be very jumpy and the voice keeps echoing all the time? :S
