    Charlotte Church U-Turns on 70% Tax Pledge

    Another champage socialist, just like all the billionaires who support Obama in America like Warren Buffet but who is the biggest hypocrite around as he avoids paying as much tax as possible yet calls for everybody else to pay more. Or just like Richard Branson who says companies would flee the UK if we left the EU but who recently moved his HQ/tax base so some offshore tax haven. A shower of hypocrites.

    If Ms Church wants more money for public services, then she should back my suggestions -

    • Cut EU contributions (save £11bn+ pa)
    • Cut Foreign Aid completely (save £11bn pa)
    • Cut HS2 (£50bn)
    • Cut all state funding to 'charities' (couple £bn a year)

    And by the way, I am actually for people paying less tax and think people should avoid tax if they can (remember avoiding is legal and evasion is not). But what I can't stand is people like Charlotte Church preaching one thing and then doing the completely opposite. Hand it all over to HMRC pet.

    Thoughts?

    Supporting a rise in tax is different to writing a cheque to HMRC... bizarre.

    Does she have an album or book out soon? Might as well have some extra publicity in the run up to release

    This. She's happy to pay her part if its going to make a difference. If she's the only one who pays 70% then it'll make virtually no difference to front-line services and she won't see anything in return for the sacrifice.

    This isn't a u-turn, this was always her position.

    I also like how people think we can completely cut aid, and then expect to set up trade deals with the countries we are alienating by cutting aid from... #logic

    Depends in what form that aid comes in. Quite a lot of aid is criticised for going to the wrong people and not really helping the general population, and trickles no further than those high up in the hierarchy.

    Also, LEDCs could set up trade deals with larger MEDCs and see better long-term benefits than just having money chucked at them - assuming the deals are with companies that are independent from the state and not state-funded. The money could be put to better use helping set up fair trade deals which benefit the poorer countries seeing long-term benefits for both the richer and poorer countries.

    Complete non-story. She didn't say she was going to give away anything, she said that she would if she was made to - which in itself isn't much of a statement since obviously she'd have no choice in the matter if that were the case

    Now if only we could find an example of someone who did make a promise about their intentions and did a complete 180 when the terms of their promise became reality...

    Better still; apply both.

    Foreign aid works well if it is done properly.

    @conservative;
    @Chippiewill;
    @FlyingJesus;

    "it's a non story" lol no it isn't. Here's a woman demanding higher taxes on higher earners... well go ahead love and make a point.

    Whilst it won't make the massive differences she says we need, she can surely help as can other wealthy celebrities who keep calling for higher taxation but who strangely don't want to pay it themselves. From Jimmy Carr having a go at tax avoidance (whilst doing it himself) to the likes of Warren Buffet who purposely avoid tax. The list goes on and on and on. When they call for higher taxes, they don't mean themselves... they mean the people who can't afford to pay for clever financial lawyers to find loopholes. Just as Labour politicians who support comprehensive education don't send their kids to them.

    As someone said, whats the betting that Charlotte Church herself has already used loopholes. I'm sure a newspaper/Guido will find something on it.
