Default Social Media and their Freedom of Speech

Social Media and their Freedom of Speech

Most of us know the power of Social Media and how it has a massive influence in today's world from advertisement, political movements, complains, advertising global/local news and keeping in touch with people across the world.

Unfortunately - the use of Social Media can be used for ill-means from trolling others online, spreading fake news and another form of bullying people whom never have met in real. With this can turn dark, such as with the recent death of Caroline Flack. For individuals who do not know who she is - she was a United Kingdom Television presenter, mainly but short from hosting Love Island. Caroline got into a spot of bother with her partner that ended up with the police being involved - with this came a spread of hate, horrible comments from social media platforms which in-turn ended up Caroline taking her own life.

Unfortunately Caroline is not the only victim of the 'Social Media Witch Hunt' - there are many of other celebrities and non-celebrities have attempted or have taken their own life through the use of social media pressures.

This debate - Do you believe social medias have too much freedom of speech with little or no regulations to control bullying etc or do you believe the social media giants are controlling their sites fine and allowing people to use their platform in their correct manner?

I think there is only so much that social media companies can really do when it comes to the use of speech on their platforms.

social media are taking advantage of their protected status as a "platform" instead of a "publisher" if they start policing speech that is fully legal and protected then they should have their "platform" status stripped.

I am beginning to think that laws protecting freedom of speech are now needed, including with private companies. The censorship of the increasingly far-left on both social media and on the university campuses needs tackling head on with legislation, to ensure and protect diversity of thought and opinion.

The universities are where I would start, where students and academics have been thrown out/lost their tenure for expressing mildly conservative views.

Social media is awful, the kids of today are so much different to us 10 years ago.
