Liverpool City Council taken into direct oversight by HM Government

Government places the Labour council under direct control for at least 3 years after report finds corruption and fraud to be rife

The authority has been under scrutiny since police began investigating building and development contracts.

The probe has seen five men, including then mayor Joe Anderson, arrested.

    Mr Anderson denies any wrongdoing.

Mr Jenrick said the "Best Value inspection", commissioned in December, had found "multiple apparent failures" and a "deeply concerning picture of mismanagement" in some functions at the Labour-run authority.

"Given the gravity of the inspection findings, I must consider what would happen if the council fails to deliver the necessary changes at the necessary speed," he said.

Mr Jenrick is proposing to appoint commissioners to run some aspects at the city council for a minimum of three years.

He added it was only the fifth time a "statutory intervention" had happened, as the move was regarded as a "last resort".

    About time.

I have known about the dodgy dealings going on with building/planning for years as I read a planning/architecture forum and there's been rumours like this for years. Given Liverpool City Council is almost a one-party state, is it any surprise we've got this sort of corruption and cronyism going on?

No matter what political stripe you are, it is never good for an elected chamber to be completely and utterly dominated by one party.

    Thoughts?

Good that these things are being picked up and acted on but interesting that they're giving Robert Jenrick control when he's among the most corrupt self serving politicians we have in government with a long list of scandals involving his nepotistic ways over billions of pounds of building and development projects for his friends. It's a bit like booting Jack Kervorkian out of his practice and replacing him with Harold Shipman

Here's the Liverpool City Council makeup. Looks like something from a one-party state.
