Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla set for 6th May 2023

The ceremony, dating back over 1,000 years, will see Their Majesties crowned with a public holiday already declared in Britain

So another bank holiday off for those of you living in Britain... I expect other Commonwealth realm countries will also declare national holidays.

The Coronation involves the King, sitting in the St Edward's Throne, being crowned with the St Edward's Crown..... after which it is removed and replaced with the Imperial State Crown. The Queen will also be crowned in a shorter and simpler ceremony, expected to use the Crown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother which was first used in the 1937 Coronation - although there are other multiple consort crowns that she could also use. Following the ceremony in Westminster Abbey, Their Majesties will then take the Gold State Coach down the mall to Buckingham Palace and will appear on the balcony for the crowds.

It will be a pretty spectacular event, the only comparable event in terms of developed countries I can think of is the Enthronement of the Japanese Emperor.

The Queen's royal cypher has been unveiled, and interestingly uses the 'Crown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother' which suggests it'll be what she will be crowned with at the Coronation. It's known The King was very close with his grandmother, so naturally he will want his wife and consort to be crowned with his grandmother's crown despite some controversy over the Koh-i-Noor diamond set into it.

The Queen has chosen the Crown of Queen Mary as her Coronation Crown.

It is being heavily refashioned with four of the eight arches removed, and is being set with Queen Elizabeth II's Cullion Diamonds in tribute to Her late Majesty.

Both this Crown (see in photo) and The King's Imperial State Crown are currently being remodelled.

The first image of The King wearing a crown has been released, it shows his effigy with a Tudor Crown on a coin.

In 23 days time we'll see him actually wearing one (two, actually) in person for the first time.




The official Coronation invite has also been unveiled, featuring various flowers representing England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We're starting to see a lot more details emerging now in the final 18 days.

I'm still waiting for the Governor of Gibraltar to release details of celebrations there as I'm taking a coach on Friday night there and staying until Sunday. My plan is (vaguely) to watch the Coronation that morning/midday in an old boozer type pub, enjoy any celebrations/armed forces parade in the town and then climb the Rock from bottom to top in commemoration. On Sunday i'll possibly cycle around Gibraltar/into Spain for a few hours.

NEW: The King’s coronation procession will be led by The Cross of Wales and contains two shards of the True Cross – which is said to be the cross used in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The fragments were given to HM by Pope Francis to mark the royal occasion.

NEW: The Coronation will see the largest military ceremonial operation in 70 years, where more than 6,000 sailors, soldiers and aviators will accompany The King and Queen Consort to and from Westminster Abbey.

A flypast over Buckingham Palace and gun salutes are planned.
