e5 as a late joiner gets Costa Rica!

SOoOoOooOooo round 2 of the group stage is done, let's see how you're all doinggggg

Wales ( @nic01e) gave us the first red card of the game, getting their keeper sent off against Iran (no-one) and ending up letting two late goals in to lose 2-0 in the first of round 2's games.

Our hosts Qatar (no-one) showed their hospitality once again by losing by a margin of two goals again, going 3-1 down to a Senegal ( @cameron446:) team that never looked particularly worried.

The Group A bookies' favourites Netherlands ( @NattyNatNat) took on dark horse fan favourites Ecuador ( @Wrecc) and held them a 1-1 draw, only allowing the oranges a single shot on target.

It was the first Anglophone match-up next, with England ( @LUCPIX) set out for an epic battle with the USA ( @someboyrafa) on the field. It was really really really boring and ended 0-0.

Saturday's early game saw Tunisia ( @LordofKittykats) fail to convert any of their 14 shots, with Australia (no-one) getting a glimmer of hope after Mitchell Duke's early goal gave them a 1-0 victory over the North Africans.

Poland ( @ErickSloth) looked like they'd been rattled by a determined Saudi Arabia (no-one) team, but two goals separated them in the end, 2-0 to the Poles.

Attacking powerhouse France ( @Ekelektra) met defensive stalwarts Denmark ( @welshcake) for a cagey match of unstoppable force vs immovable object. France took a 2-1 victory, but it was a hard fight all the way to the whistle.

Argentina ( @Wsup) had a huge disappointment in the first game, but finally came alive against Mexico ( @jamiexo) towards the end, getting only two shots on target but both of those hitting the net: another 2-0.

Japan (no-one) came hot off beating the krauts while Costa Rica ( @e5) had just had a hammering against the Spaniards... so of course it makes perfect sense that Costa Rica won this one 1-0 with their only shot on target.

Belgium ( @Hola.) have one of the best teams in the world on paper, but Morocco ( @chiong) apparently showed up to write records in stone, getting a 2-0 victory over the European superstars, who failed to impress in all ways on the night.

Croatia ( @Shannon) got a shock early on as Canada ( @habbosymbols) scored within two minutes of play. It wasn't to be for the moose-riding hockey players however, who went on to lose 4-1 in an incredibly entertaining game.

Two huge European rivals ended honours even at 1-1 as a young skilful Spain ( @lawrawrrr) were held off by a Germany ( @RichBoiSam) team with a revived purpose after their first game defeat.

How was your Monday morning? Those who got to watch Cameroon (no-one) vs Serbia ( @mazehx123) had a fantastic start to their week with a six goal thriller, five of those happening in a 20 minute window. 3-3 the final score here.

The goals kept coming in the next game too, with South Korea ( @lucyecc) managing briefly to draw level with Ghana (no-one), but it was kudos to Kudus who scored another to put the lowest ranked team in the tournament ahead.

Brazil ( @tbl) looked shaky with their talisman Neymar out injured, and Switzerland ( @Conor) held them off marvellously until the 83rd minute. 1-0 to the team looking to win their sixth World Cup.

The final game of this 2nd batch had Portugal ( @Chipmunks) winning another dodgy penalty, this time against Uruguay ( @MadameJaquack) who had none of the luck on the night. A 2-0 end result meant the winners of the first ever World Cup now absolutely must win their next game to stay in.

WE GO AGAIN TOMORROW AHHHHH it never stops it's football football football lads lads lads

Time for one last HUGE update as the group stages are now over - some of you will now unfortunately be OUT!

From here it's knockout stages and we halve in number each time which is great for me as it's less work

Ecuador ( @Wrecc) and Senegal ( @cameron446:) had it all to play for, with a win for either guaranteeing a place in the last 16. Senegal went through in the end for the first time since 2002, winning it 2-1.

Netherlands ( @NattyNatNat) went in looking to punish the hosts Qatar (no-one) and while they didn't particularly shine, it was an easy and comfortable 2-0 victory for the Dutch.

Literally anyone could have qualified from Group B, so Iran (no-one) vs USA ( @someboyrafa) was a must-win for the yanks, and they just about edged it 1-0 courtesy of Chelsea's Pulisic.

Wales ( @nic01e) went in against England ( @LUCPIX) full of hope and held things level to the halfway point. It fell apart in the 2nd half however, with England taking it to a solid 3-0 by the final whistle.

Tunisia ( @LordofKittykats) were definitely not the favourites against France ( @Ekelektra), but the French played a B team (having already guaranteed qualification) and paid the price; a shock 1-0 victory to Tunisia!

The shocks kept coming in Group D as Australia (no-one) slotted one away against an ineffective Denmark ( @welshcake). 1-0 not only sent the Danes home, but also dashed Tunisia's short-lived hopes by going above them too.

Poland ( @ErickSloth) went into the game with Argentina ( @Wsup) top of the group, but were utterly dominated. Zero shots on target for the Poles and just 26% of possession gave the Argies an easy 2-0 win on the night.

Saudi Arabia (no-one) and Mexico ( @jamiexo) both needed a win to have a chance of progression. Mexico went 2 up, but the Saudis had SOME revenge; a 95th minute goal means that Mexico still don't qualify despite a 2-1 win, missing out by that one single goal on goal difference.

Croatia ( @Shannon) failed to hit the target, but luckily for them Belgium ( @Hola.) have been absolutely useless in this tournament. 0-0 means Belgium go home, and they very much deserve it.

Canada ( @habbosymbols) started the game against Morocco ( @chiong) with zero points... and ended with zero. 2-1 to the North Africans sends them to the top of the group, a huge achievement in what could have been a tricky group.

Japan (no-one) vs Spain ( @lawrawrrr). What the actual bobba. Spain completed 1058 passes with 91% accuracy and had 83% of the total possession... and lost 2-1. Japan by constrast had 228 passes at 67% accuracy and just 17% possession, the lowest of any World Cup winning team ever.

Costa Rica ( @e5) went an early goal down against Germany ( @RichBoiSam) but clawed it back and went ahead briefly in the 2nd half. If things had stayed that way, both Spain and Germany would have been out, but the Germans rallied and it ended 4-2 in their favour.

South Korea ( @lucyecc) conceded to Portugal ( @Chipmunks) in the first 5 minutes, but the Europeans (who were already guaranteed qualification anyway) couldn't hold out and Korea took a 2-1 victory.

Ghana (no-one) vs Uruguay ( @MadameJaquack) played out at the same time as the above. The South Americans glided to a 2-0 victory, but despite an identical number of points and goal difference as Korea still go home; the Koreans had scored more in total.

Serbia ( @mazehx123) and Switzerland ( @Conor) could have been a really boring game, but both teams came alive in a five goal thriller. 3-2 to the Swiss was enough to send them on the next round.

Blood sweat and tears in the final group game, Cameroon (no-one) vs Brazil ( @tbl). The Brazilians failed to perform all game, and in the 92nd minute an incredible ball through to Aboubakar's head sealed a 1-0 late victory for Cameroon and a wave of emotions across the football world. Cameroon still go home, but what a way to end it!

    ON TO THE FINAL 16.
Two of the teams deemed too low-rated to have a chance (Japan and Australia) have made it through, while some tournament favourite are going home. Madness.

We say goodbye at this stage to the following players:

    Wrecc (Ecuador)
    nic01e (Wales)
    jamiexo (Mexico)
    Lordofkittykats (Tunisia)
    welshcake (Denmark)
    RichBoiSam (Germany)
    e5 (Costa Rica)
    Hola. (Belgium)
    habbosymbols (Canada)
    mazehx123 (Serbia)

The number has halved again, we march on towards the quarter finals!

Saturday saw a high performing Netherlands ( @NattyNatNat) take on tournament minnows USA ( @someboyrafa) in a game where the stats looked strangely even, but the Dutch were the more clinical team in front of goal. 3-1 sees the 'Murricans fly home early to bathe in corn syrup.

Next up Argentina ( @Wsup) fielding the best player in the world came up against Australia (no-one) fielding... a guy with a weird moustache. I literally know one Australian player. Anyway this was closer than it had a right to be, Argentina only managing to win 2-1 against a team they should have thrashed.

France ( @Ekelektra) put on a footballing masterclass against Poland ( @ErickSloth) going three up before a penalty given in the 99th minute allowed Lewandowski to convert (after initially missing but being allowed to retake...) for a consolation goal. 3-1 at the final whistle.

England ( @LUCPIX) faced Senegal ( @cameron446:) next and had a terrifying first half hour being hounded by a super speedy opponent before coming alive at last. After the entire country wondered why Jordan Henderson was even playing, he went and scored the first of a thumping 3-0 victory.

Japan (no-one) went all guns blazing against Croatia ( @Shannon) in a bid to overwhelm their opponent, and did go ahead just before the half time break. An equaliser for 1-1 meant the game went to penalties, and Croatia took the glory 3-1 on penalties.

Nobody expected Brazil ( @tbl) to lose to South Korea ( @lucyecc) but what an absolutely magical performance. The Brazilians annihilated their opponents with four goals in the first half, conceding a late consolation later on but comfortably and fashionably winning 4-1.

With just 23% of the possession Morocco ( @chiong) somehow held off Spain ( @lawrawrrr), whose 1019 passes (with 90% accuracy!) never ended in a goal. Even when it went to penalties, the Spaniards failed to put even one in the net: 3-0 on pens to Morocco and another shock exit for a big European team.

Rounding off the last 16 we had Portugal ( @Chipmunks) leaving Ronaldo on the bench and proving they don't need him, putting 6 goals past Switzerland ( @Conor) who only managed 1 in response. 6-1 at the whistle and plenty of entertainment - unless you're a Swiss fan.

Into the quarters this weekend, and we now say goodbye to:

    someboyrafa (USA)
    ErickSloth (Poland)
    cameron446: (Senegal)
    lucyecc (South Korea)
    lawrawrrr (Spain)
    Conor (Switzerland

Everyone left in it does have a Habboxer assigned to them, thank heavens

    AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR

The first of the quarter final games had Croatia ( @Shannon) holding off tournament favourites Brazil ( @tbl) right into extra time, and even then it ended honours even at 1-1. Penalties decided the winner in the end, with Livakovic in goal being the hero as Croatia put 4 penalties into the back of the net compared to Brazil's 2, putting paid to their plans to win a sixth tournament.

The Netherlands ( @NattyNatNat) looked set for heartbreak against Argentina ( @Wsup) until two extremely late goals from substitute Weghorst secured a 2-2 draw and another penalty shootout. It was close, but Argentina edged it 4-3 on pens in the end... there were also 3 yellow cards and 1 red card DURING THE PENALTIES what the heck. Behave, gentlemen.

Overachieving Morocco ( @chiong) were a brick wall against Portugal ( @Chipmunks), the latter going 80 minutes without getting a shot on target. A goal from En-Nesyri just before half time was the only one of the game, 1-0 making Morocco the first African team in history to ever reach the semi finals of a World Cup. An incredible display from a team who's now knocked out 3 European giants.

England ( @LUCPIX) vs France ( @Ekelektra); old rivals on and off the pitch. It was France who took an early lead with an incredible hit outside the box. Despite the referee's best efforts at temporary blindness, he was forced to give a penalty for Kane to make it level. Several more bad decisions later, Giroud nodded home an excellent cross to send France 2-1 up, and the next chance for an equaliser went sailing over the bar from Kane. Football's not coming home, but the team is.

Four more down, we now bid farewell to:

    tbl (Brazil)
    NattyNatNat (Netherlands)
    Chipmunks (Portugal)
    LUCPIX (England)

    Hey everyone,
The Christmas period hit me pretty hard so my apologies for not following this up until now, but we have some results!

    1st Prize
for the overall winning country, obv

If you follow football or were within 7 miles of anyone who does you'll probably be aware that Argentina won the 2022 World Cup, meaning that the winner of the rainbow curls is @Wsup! Congratulations to our top winner woopwoopwoop

    2nd Prize
for the country that comes 2nd... ok

2nd place went to France, represented here by @Ekelektra - she wins the Onsen Resort Yukata!

    LESS CARDS AT CHRISTMAS
for the team with the most total yellow/red cards in the tournament

Sometimes fighting dirty gets results. The team with the most yellow cards (at a whopping 17 in 7 games!) winning a bonus 10c is Argentina, so more prizes to @Wsup!

    FAIR ENOUGH MATE
for the country that wins the Fair Play Trophy... the opposite of the above

Then again, being nice can pay off too! 10c for the LEAST yellow cards with 6 apiece goes to Portugal ( @Chipmunks) and Brazil ( @tbl) who kept it clean... mostly.

    WHAT A HOWLER
for conceding the most goals in the group stage

Sometimes you get dealt a dud. It happens. Costa Rica weren't the worst team in the entire tournament, but an early heavy loss means that with 11 goals conceded in the 3 group games, 10c as a consolation prize goes to @e5!

Thanks for playing along guys, and contact me if you have prizes to claimmmmm
