Mark Carney is appointed Canada's Prime Minister

The Governor General of Canada, on behalf of the King of Canada, appoints Mark Carney as Canada's 24th Prime Minister

He's the former Governor of both the Banks of England and Canada - and he had a disastrous tenure at the BoE in my view, leading to the rampant post-lockdown inflation we've endured. He's currently not an MP either in the Canadian House of Commons - under the Westminster system you actually don't have to be in Parliament to serve in office.

Canada will have a confederal election before October of this year (at the new PMs choosing of time) so he will stand for a constituency then (or as the Canadians call them, a riding). He replaces Justin Trudeau who served as Canadian PM from 2015-2025.

    Thoughts?

PM Carney met with The King of Canada earlier this week for a private audience.

The Liberals have surged in the polls now after looking at a wipe out under Justin Trudeau. We've been here before though, back in 1993 when PM Brian Mulroney stepped down after a lengthy stint in office and Kim Campbell succeeded him as PM, the ruling Progressive Conservatives surged back up in the polls only to then collapse shortly after in the General Election and end up collapsing as a political force in Canadian politics.

PM Carney requested the Governor General to dissolve the Canadian Parliament and call a General Election.

Canadians will go to the polls on 28th April. Current polling has the Liberals leading the Conservatives by a couple of points.

The King has issued the proclamation dissolving the Parliament.
