If a Tree Falls in forest and nobody hears it fall does.it make a sound ?

Yes it does , but people dont pay attention :D
of course it makes a noise, by the laws of physics movment is energy which can not be destroyed. Therfor it must change from one form to another, e.g. sound. The falling tree causes vibrations wich is what the human ear picks up and hears.
By the laws of physics, yes there will be a sound.

But how can it make a sound if no one is there to hear it?
I could talk now, and you wouldnt hear it, does that mean I'm not making a noice? Its the same for the tree.

There is someone there to hear it though, yourself. So that point wouldn't hold up.

Listen. Trees fall that makes a noise. We dont have to hear it for it to make a noise now? What about the big bang? No one was there to hear it or if a rock falls into a sea it makes a noise but not loud enouth to hear for us! There is noise all around us.
Anyway, if a tree hits the ground it causes vibrations, which = noise. It doesn't matter if no one hears it, it still makes a sound

But if nothing is there to detect it then you cannot prove that it does. You assume that it will because that's what would happen if you were there to witness it, but if you're not then you can't prove that it does anything.

I think it makes a sound cause well theres still a sound...
And anyway there could be bugs in the tree that wd hear it..and u neva no it aint been proven that trees dont ave ears just like humans! :p

Obviously it would make a sound, a tree can hear a tree fall, a bunny can hear a tree fall. Just because humans may actually care doesn't mean we're the only ones that would hear.
basically, this philisophical argument began when people thought the world was flat. Science has proven them wrong, and lets face it, the chineese are whacko, they burn themselfs, eat swords and stand on glass...freaks and btw that diesnt go to all chinees people...just the philisophers :p

actually, physics has done that!

it does make a sound, but it cannot be prooved it makes a sound
omg:@:@:@:@ how many times??? SCIENCE and MILLIONS of experements say it will make a noise :@ it is proven :@

But.. how can you prove it, if nothing is there to hear it ;). And, yes, animals do count as something that can hear it.
because countless experements by scientists have proven that movment energy causes sound energy, which therefore means SOUND!!!:@:@:@ Why cant people just accept this?

Yes but you must understand, in those experiment there were scientists and microphones all around to hear and detect the sound, what we are saying is that if there was nothing to detect the sound, how can you prove that it would? You can't, you can only predict.

Well, first of all, if you have two trees, both quite tall, and you put a microphone to one of them when they fall, you will hear it... Then you leave the other one to fall itself with no other microphone, it will still make a noise as because of the surface area it will land with a large bang. Nothing can be completely proven though, i mean, i was argueing recently with some of my friends about explaining the colour red, they were saying that we are brought up to know the colour red as people point it out, and me being the smart person i am  put forward the point that if you show someone a colour, thats what they think the colour will be the rest of there life.
Okay let me break it down a bit for you...
Say your friend pointed at a red car, and you had never seen the colour red before, if your friend says to you 'that is a red car' even although you are seeing the colour green, so you will think the rest of your life that the colour 'green' is the colour 'red' then we got to deep into things where it confuses you... The point i am trying to make is that nothing is impossible, but somethings are too hard, and to complicated, that the human mind cannot explain it...
well whatever :P It is more than a prediction that the tree will make a sound, if the tree fell, it moved which means sound.

It depends what you call sounds.
Sound - As in the air vibrting
Yes it would
Sound - as in your brains interprition of this sound
- no it woulnt.

But what if the tree was in a vacuum when it fell? It wouldn't make a sound
Mentor
05-03-2005, 08:27 PM
true. but teh question said the tree was in a wood if i rember rightly
But what if the tree was in a vacuum when it fell? It wouldn't make a sound
it wouldnt fall, infact it would crumble thats like puting a tree in space
Mentor
05-03-2005, 09:03 PM
a vacume is not nessary space. there would still be gravity wich is why things fall, just no atmosphear inside it
but the concept is the air, with out the air, the tree is doomed, lol.
Well why would it make a sound when we do hear it then if it doesnt if no ones around

The first time i heard it it acultly cleard my thoughts :p
lol, were still talking about this?

I think it would make a noise. To be honest, I dont really care!
