Has any one got the EEE Asus laptop?
It is tiny and comes with Linux on it :)
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Asus_EeePC2GS_EEEPC2GS-W001/version.asp
It even has a solid-state drive.
I have seen 2 people at uni have it, and both had installed windows on it, which i think they have ruined it! lol
I just wanted to know what the pre-installed linux OS was like?

You joking? They are a brilliant price for what they are.
I was going to buy one, upgrade it to 1GB RAM and then put a flash card in it to put a bit more space into the baby then unlock the full Linux KDE desktop, maybe install Windows on it.

Well if it's cheaper than an iPod touch I may seriously consider it for work :)

It would seem REALLY pointless - what would you want one for .. I'd rather get a regular laptop.

I can't afford a regular laptop, and I would never use a laptop for gaming, just internet and work. Seems ideal.

Well i would only use it for internet and word processing anyway.
I think its great value, solid state drives are expensive anyway.

It looks brilliant. Im planning on getting one with my birthday money for college and general stuff. The linux operating system shipped is based off Xandros and this poses afew problems since Xandros isnt great at is now pretty out of date. I will be installing eeeXubuntu which is simply Xubuntu specifically designed for the eeepc.

A few people i know have them, They seem pretty good, there only downfalls are really that the keyboard can be a little bit "too" small, making it hard to type, and the fact Xandros (The defualt O/S) has pretty crapy networking support. (i dont know anyone yet whos got it working on my unis wireless)
If you are thinking of getting one, you may wana hold off for some of the next versions of em, 1GB memoery standard, 8gb ssd, plus they may get some models with bigger screens (talk of touch screens to)
Hopefuly without to much effect on the excelent value for money.

It does run CSS, but it's very complicated to set up.

They said they are never going to make the screen bigger, but always try and update it. The keyboard isn't very small, and wireless works fine in my school and at home.
It's really good value for money, and quite practical. I took a picture a few weeks back; it's smaller then a Coke bottle, lol.

Tom, on my laptop i play all Counter-Strike games and CSS lags the most out of all 3-4 of them just need to get a good GFX card if it doesn't already have it.
Lag factor on my laptop:
1. Counter-Strike: Source (Graphic lag is ok but still worse then all)
2. Counter-Strike: 1.6 (Graphic lag like CSS)
3. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (lags on Fires and rocket launchers)
4. Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (only when hegrenande explodes)

Well I'm on the very laptop right now and its perfect for my needs. I'm 15 and its great for school work and around the house.
Very portable, light and easy to carry
Speakers are loud enough
The keyboard is fine just takes a little getting used to.
Built in camera which is very handy and good pixels.
Memory seems fine for school work and pictures (4gb)
Laptop speed is very fast.
Good programs already installed for school work
Wireless is ok but can be slightly annoying as it sometimes goes off for no reason.
Linux is a bit rubbish imo. Pidgin (AIM) is completely rubbish compared to Msn plus.
The desktop doesn't feel like a desktop for some reason.
Some programs don't support Linux for example Shockwave.
No disk drive
I personally would prefer Windows on here. Does anyone know how much memory it takes up and other complications that may occur?
And also when I download it doesn't seem to download properly. I tried downloading Limewire and it downloaded and I found where I had downloaded it to just when I double clicked it to install it didn't open.
Help would be appreciated thanks =]

You'd need a Linux version of Limewire, or run it on WINE.

Buy a flash card for it and a USB CD Drive and install Windows. Or unlock the proper desktop, not some ***** that ASUS put 'over' the desktop.

Just as a note your not running a proper linux O/S on the ee by default, so thats why it doesnt feel like a proper desktop (because its not)
Because of the space limiations (screen size) they use a modifed version of xandros, i belive you can enable full desktop functionaty if you need it though o.0
The normal desktops are much like windows normally in basic operation.

I bought one and it arrived December 22nd 2007 which worked out nice because that was my Birthday too! I got rid of Linux, of course. With Linux its uses are limited. I stuck XP on it and bought a big SDHC memory card to make up for the 4gig hard disk. I stuck Visual Basics, Office 2007, Firefox and Grand Theft Auto on it and I just use it when I'm out and about. I can use my Razr phone as a modem to get on the internet with it too. Since I got it my PDA has been collecting dust :P.

I agree as far as the white model goes, however I love the black model, it looks like my dell only on a much smaller scale ;).
800 x 480
You can use 800x600 in scrolling mode and 800x600 and 1024x768 if you download the drives one of the forum members at http://eeeuser.com has created. You can also buy a touch screen for around $80 and install that on the device too.

Do you wish your Eee PC had a larger screen? Higher resolution? More RAM? More storage space?
eee-pc-900.jpg
ASUS has your solution with the next generation Eee PC 900 series. It will feature a 8.9″ screen, running at 1024 x 600 resolution. You’ll be able to store 12GB of data, and will have 1GB of ram to access in a package a bit larger than the Eee PC 701. The cost? $600. Look for it in select countries later this summer.
What's the point in this one? Better Laptop's are cheaper then it.

The size of the laptop is still smaller than a laptop. Small sub notebook or UMPC range :).

No, they're not. Perhaps you're thinking of the OLPC.
Http://eeeuser.com - the best website for the ASUS EEE.
I'm probably the youngest member, and I'm a teenager. They've been adding touch screens to the EEE, internal bluetooth and GPS, they've added internal memory sticks, modified display drivers, overclocking and much more (see http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewforum.php?id=12).
Edit: :P I just searched EeeUser's forum,

Yes i have got one and since my alienware as been sent back to be fixed i have been using it all the time. Some may say that the keys are small but i have typed this with ease. I am 16 and find it easy after a few days...You wouldn't want to type long documents. I love the inux operating system and includes skype and pidgin - an msn alternative. Works the same as msn but you can only seem to use the webcam with skype. I installed amsn which works well.
The screen size is perfect and the laptop can be fitted in a large pocket. The laptop is soo light it is unbelievable and the battery life of 3hrs is great for using on the go. The laptop starts up within 20seconds and shuts down in under 5 seconds. I have the 4GB version and the operating system takes up 2GB so HDD is small but i havent used more than 100mb in 6months. I use a 8GB SD card and a 16GB usb drive for windows but i prefer linux.
The internet is decent and connects to wireless hotspots. Takes longer than windows but once connected is reliable. I am not sure how people can say they can play CSS as it lags abit multitasking and the proccessor isnt that powerful. I bought mine in New ealand for $699 with a three year warranty with Harvey Norman which is great cos theres a shop in Ireland.

As for the EEE's design I believe it to be a standard laptop look..only compact.

Personal preference. I like the classic ThinkPad look on my laptop. I think the Acer's new style is chunky, and just ugly.
You would be lucky to run Red Alert 2 on an asus eeepc.
You could certainly run Red Alert on an EEE. You cannot make assumptions about the device without using it. The EEE's SSD does make the device substantially faster, not to mention the fact that you can safely clock the EEE to 990Mhz.

Yeah, I've been watching that, the Dell make, HP and MSI remakes too. It's called the subnote war. Many companies are competing to release the best. The Acer's release has the nice sized keyboard, and it's only a bit larger than the EEE701. However disliking Acer laptops due to overheating, and week LCDs seem to be the general consensus around subnote forums.
