Well, I'm not exactly a very good designer in my opinion,
xD

I need some ideas, tips etc to get myself going, and actually start designing,
properly, and actually getting a good template.

Perserverance is the primary objective.
Probably the best piece of design wise advice I've ever had.

And a quote from David Airey (DavidAirey.co.uk)
"The designers three most important tools. A nutritious breakfast, a sketchpad (pencil included) and your brain."

Sorry to get like this haha.
Designing away from the computer works for me personally.

yeh, its where you should start when designing anything.

also, when you have finished the design (on computer or in a sketch) think to yourself, woulod wou use that website and would it suit the audience

Design briefs!
More professional, but it helps to know the target audience and the feel the site is to give.

Take a free template apart, or go on a known Warez forum and get something from the template/scripts section, Try using the PSD's, as it's easier creating a style you'll stick with, not from scratch.

Use tutorials (not just layout tutorials, text, banners, sigs and so on they all have good thing in them, don't bother with long ones though there normaly pritty crap and over explained.) for a month or two before you start designing your self.
