A few things of interest...

Cigarettes up 11p a packet of 20 from 1800 GMT; five cigars up 4p.
Beer up by 4p a pint, wine 14p a bottle, spirits 55p a bottle and cider 3p a litre by Sunday.
Tax will go up on cars that pollute more.
2p increase in fuel duty is postponed until October this year. There are lots more (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7291841.stm) but I cba to write them all and alcohol, cigarettes and cars are probably the most popular issues. What do you think (:

Alcohol and fuel are the ones that affect me mostly - a 2p increase on the already outrageous fuel prices is just not needed. :@

Hmm, the fuel duty is good I guess. Tax cars is a good idea to meet Carbon Emission Targets. All alcoholic products is also a good idea, to prevent children from buying them. It won't make a big difference, but slowly and steadily wins the race. Cigarettes definetly though. They're evil.

Typical us sensible people hit again, we have to suffer because of idiots who can't control their drinking. The increases don't sound alot but it does add up at the end of the day.

Hmm, the fuel duty is good I guess.Do you realise how much is already on this? In Lanzarote where I went for my holiday, it was around 40p for a litre and over here it's around £1.08.

Jesus christ, I never knew that. :o I meant it was good to reduce carbon emissions tbh, but whoa.

British prices are ridiculous - no wonder why people are leaving and I certainly will be when i'm older enough to. I would not want to stay in this country at all.

The ones in bold are not needed at all. Fuel has gone up enough, my mums finding it hard to afford at the moment since he work takes her all over the north-west.

EDIT: (I like this one) -
• Laws will be introduced by 2009 to tax plastic bags if shops do not do more to charge for their use.

Interesting,

All make sense I suppose, I see what REDNECK means about the fuel it's rediculous at the moment!

I think cigs should be even more, I don't smoke myself but it's your choice to smoke and it's also an addiction, the government should take advantage of this.

Also Jeremy Clarkson would make us all dance around with flat caps, checkerd shirts and grandad trousers thats not good!

In all essence, the Spirits haven't gone up for many year's and to keep them in line with the rest of the alcohol increases, it was only fair (and predicted) that they'd go up this budget, that's why there's a huge 55p increase.

None of it comes as a particular surprise, just the usual increases, the only surprise is that supermarkets will now have to charge for plastic shopping bags which I didn't expect for many years.

In reply to the post above, I totally agree and it shows we're getting known around Europe and the world we're getting our reputation absolutely hammered, why couldn't we of nationalised something decent like British Gas?

One of the things that made me laugh was when i was watching it live about 12:30 and one of the speaker couldnt get his words out and everyone was jeering him and laughing and he was told to sit down:P

SPIRITS UP 55P A BOTTLE :o:o but vodka's all I drink lol, this is RUBBISH. I know duty's been frozen on spirits for like a decade but this isn't needed :( I thought on the alcohol issue they were just wanting to target things like white lightning and special brew which are really cheap and strong.

Do they ever announce in budgets they're going to slice the tax on something? I'm yet to ever hear of it happening, it's just up, up and up. I guess more economical vehicles may pay less road tax, but it's hardly much.

fuel is the biggest issue for me. It is expensive enough as it is and this week along it has moved from 105.9 - 107.9 in most places and the 2p increase comes in OCTOBER, so it adds a further 2p to whatever the price of fuel is in october. grr. as for beer, thats no biggy, 4p wont make much difference but still, annoying put it that way.

Socialists never cut taxes they just raise them, socialism claims it's for the people yet it taxes the very people it was designed to help.

As above, The only things I liked about the Bush Administration were it's tactics on crime, tax and climate change. Our government is in debt now when we weren't in debt 10 years ago.

We need a fuel strike, bring the country to a standstill because it's the only thing that makes this stupid pathetic government listen. Oil & Petrol is actually quite cheap but it's tax that makes it high and especially in this country, we pay the most tax in europe and we give the most money into the EU.

Alcohol and cigarettes I can agree with, but more tax on petrol?! I'm movin' to Slovenia when I raise the money!

Who's up on nuking London :D We just have to move anyone who is related to this problem and a few people we don't like. Boom, done.

I think I'm about to make myself very unpopular, but meh :D

Fuel is taxed far too much, but in the Chancellor's defense, he hasn't actually raised taxes on it this year. Gordon Brown first announced the 2p rise in his 2007 budget, and given the current situation, Darling has delayed it until October. No, it's not perfect, but it's better than the timetable that Brown had given us.

And to be honest, I agree with the tax rises on alcohol, polluting cars and cigarettes etc.

Why should we pay more for Alcohol & Cigarettes. We already pay absurd prices for them. This government is just a total disgrace.

It is in shops, not pubs and clubs. Just because it's cheap now, is that an excuse to make it expensive.

Well, I say I support the rise on alcohol and cigarettes because a) I don't personally smoke (at all) or drink (much) and b) Both have been known to wreck lives, although I'm not condemning anyone who drinks, and to a certain degree, smokes in moderation. I can see it will be very annoying if you are a moderate smoker/drinker.

Just from my perspective, the rises are good and don't really effect me.

Yes, because it's aiming to stop the binge drinking. One of the main reasons for binge drinking is because it is cheap, and easy to get. And so what if its also high in pubs and clubs? They get their fare share of wreck-heads too.

Yet 24 hour drinking is allowed?

Do you really believe Labour when they say it's to stop binge drinking?

Well they have to do something don't they. Yeah, 24hr drinking is wrong - I can actually admit when my party does something I don't believe in.

They increase alcohol/tabacco tax to make more money, saying it's to curb addictions is just a good excuse.

Don't worry, when I take over I'll print lots of money but not tell anyone so hyperinflation doesn't occur. Then I can destroy taxes but still pay the NHS.
