View Full Version : Klydo New Homepage

Klydo
11-04-2008, 08:43 PM
Okay, this is the new homepage design of Klydo. It includes the new header and footer along with the featured member. However I'm in need of possible ideas for what to display as well as ideas on how to display the items. So far our plan is to display;
New Members
New Music
New Videos
New Blogs
New Skins
Latest Klydo NewsIf you have any please share and comment on the new design :)

*Image Removed*

Edited by Nick- (Forum Administrator): Please do not post pictures containing images of other members. I understand this was unintentional and accidental which is why only the image has been removed.

You like your threads, dontcha =)

Looking good, maybe don't have all those new things as sometimes it gets overwhelming like myspace homepage. Maybe just have latest: videos, members, and news.

Possibly some kind of moveabale javascript window to display the latest news? That can be closed and dragged around the site.

Well done so far, it's looking nice!

We do have an announcements bar which appears at the top of the site that can be closed after reading if that's what you meant?

Appears too white to me, add a light colour maybe blue or red either way.

What I mean is:

A box that comes up showing some information that can be dragged around the main page and also closed.

Hmmm, I hate those things on other sites. So I wouldn't put that onto my site to annoy my members :P

We can't really add any colours to the content as the header can be made any colour the user wants. So we have to aviod coloured content as it will mismatch with the header :P

Kieran

Possibly just a stripe somewhere that changes colour the same as the header? Just to break the whiteness up.

That can't be done unfortunately. As that would involve editing two hex codes instead of one.

"The customer is always right."

Therefore change the font or no I won't stop going on about it.

Shame I had to throw it down in laymens terms because the rest of the design is great! To be honest get rid of the advert and put some music updates on there but I wouldn't put any more on because it overloads the site.

The top bar looks ace apart from the text. Good designing! Keep it up + change the goddamn text.

Text is staying, it the best looking there is. Arial looks awful, Verdana even worse, Trebuchet MS still not good, Georgia is okay but not as good as it as atm. So I won't be changing the font since it's the best looking.

I thought web design was all about opinion. Seems you are only listening to the opinions you want to hear.

Why don't you post the image with some other fonts on so we can SEE how they look rather than you bully us into thinking you are right all the time?

Okay, i've heard enough.

If your going to complain about C+C all the time, why not actually post some Constructive Criticism?

I'm not all "for" the font myself, but I don't complain as I am working on something that will change the site for individual users.

Why not suggest some fonts instead of saying "change the font" over and over.

You don't understand that we have changed the font, over and over, and nothing looks better then that at the current moment.

If you actually want to post some constructive criticism, why not post the names of fonts, and maybe a link to them? (Not Trajan w/e Pro. I just tried that, looks awful dan :P.)

The header can already be changed by users to a color of their choice, and I am working on a font system that you can change the headers with a TTF font. There will be a library of them for you to choose from.

I am currently working on the video system, which in my opinion works great, and integrates into the YouTube system, which not many sites do, no.. not the Chromeless player either.

Hopefully this cleared at least something up .

All music is uploaded by it's original creator. Anyone uploading then takes full responsibility for the audio they've uploaded. If anyone is found uploading audio they didn't make/have full copyright permissions to then the account will be deleted and possibly further actions taken if the problem persists.

No, any music which is planned to be publically played needs to be either played by it's creator/copyright owner or played with a license. Therefore if the creator/copyright owner uploads it's then legal if someone else does it's illegal

^^ I'm not a fan of the Cooper-style typeface in the navigation so I tried Georgia and although not perfect, it seems quite satisfactory (for three minutes' work... you could fiddle with the kerning and size a little).

The obvious advantage to this is that being a web-safe font, Georgia can be used confidently as actual text as opposed to the old-fashioned image button technique that not only wastes bandwidth and increases loading times for the user; but hinders usability and accessibility.

The Arial was fine, anyway... a thousand miles better than the Cooper-style typeface. And Trajan Pro is a good typeface (although admittedly overused and wouldn't be suitable and relevant for this project)!

Also, I'm not sure about you, but I'm not an expert enough iconographer to use icons without any textual description or label. I had trouble identifying just where a few of the icons would lead me, and I'm sure a less savvy web user would have even more trouble!

So far I managed to identify from left to right: network? (definitely not intuitive for non-web users), friends/parental controls, favourites?, help/support, close window?.

Also, I fail to see how you hate Arial/Helvetica with a passion for the header (where the mockup shown is surprisingly suitable) but is used in the section below where it looks bland and uninteresting.

The text in the top section is far too small and the mid-grey on light-grey has very little contrast. Plus, being an italicised sans-serif that hinders legibility further.

Where's any search functionality? Today's web users demand quick access to data (of whichever form) and having no search on the main page is just a detraction.

The advert is obtrustive, irrelevant and takes up space that could be used for something useful. May I suggest you review your revenue sources as Google Ads are certainly not the best earners!

In full, a mediocre design... not bad but tediously bland and unexciting (the opposite you want with the young demographic you're undoubtedly aiming at).

Finally, please learn to take criticism, Mr. Cooper! These forum members are only trying to help by suggesting that the navigation font is a bad choice (and in my opinion they are correct)... they are only trying to undermine your design 'skill' if that's how arrogant and ego-tastic you are.

You are not an invincible, amazing designer (neither am I) so please don't act like one. Take the feedback like a man, and better yourself and design skill by embracing it.

Thankyou.

P.S. The CAPTCHAs on this site are incredibly frustrating... it took me about twelve attempts to get in. I'm sure it's better to let a bot in once or twice than keep ten times as many contributing users out.

Perhaps you could consider a system such as reCAPTCHA, although I'm not sure how well that would integrate into a closed vBulletin.

We don't have any captchas on our system, and it is not run by vBulletin, nor any system that is not developed by us.

So what are you talking about?

So far I managed to identify from left to right: network? (definitely not intuitive for non-web users), friends/parental controls, favourites?, help/support, close window?.

The icons, when rolled over, display a tooltip with their action.

The Network Icon is for Administrators. Network Control.
The two people is account management.
Heart is favorites.
? is help and support.
X is logout.

What useful things could be there then?

We are currently looking into other revenue sources, and at this current time Google AdSense seems to be the best thing for us.

To remove the ads, users can purchase the premium membership :)
