Hey,

I came back on to my laptop after being away for about 20 minutes and it was on standby. So I pressed the return key so it came back onto normal screen. I left it for 2 minutes whilst I sorted something and I came back and it had crashed. I couldn't do anything, start task manager, use my mouse so I turned in off.

I then turned it back on, but now I have to wait 10 minutes for the startup to load and then another 20+ minutes for the actual desktop to load.

I tried running a Restore but unfortunately its saying you cannot restore, to do this, restart the PC.

Anyway, I am using my laptop to write this thread but nothing has loaded like the Network Connection, MSN and the icons next to the clock. The browser and sometimes the desktop bar change to the really old style.

I have the drivers on disk so I am just backing them up and going to restart to see if that makes a difference. If not, do you have any suggestions or what may have caused this?

Thanks :)

You might of damaged some files by turning it of,

i would recomend backing your needed stuff up, and re-installing.

Boot in safe mode (press F8 when booting up) and see what happens.

How would I go about re-installing it?

I booted in safe mode and I can't restore as it says the same thing as it does in normal mode.

Its still slow in safe mode and nothing I can really do.

If I can re-install some how then I suppose that would work. As I said, I have just copied the old drivers to the current ones and waiting for it to show the shutdown options (been waiting 5 minutes now).

Boot in safe mode, insert your xp backup disk (the one you made when you got the laptop) and scan for missing/damaged system files. :)

I'm going to sound really stupid, how can I scan for missing files? lol.

Once you have put your disk in click start > run > and type "sfc /scannow" (without the "'s)

Jesus it sounds like a standard bluescreen with crash-before, don't go through radical steps like these chumps are suggesting, just reboot your laptop as normal, should speed up.

I have done but now windows is loading really slow, takes 10 minutes for the windows loading screen to go off and then another 20 minutes for desktop to load. Then once I am on, I can't restore to an earlier point and no icons load in the clock corner. It also takes ages for something to load.

Got directed to the microsoft website because all the programs at startup gave me that error problem. It appears that there problems with my hard disk which windows can't access files so I am just seeing the resolutions. Ill post to tell you whats happened but if you can think of a solution before this loads, please tell me.

Taking it to the shop is the best bet if you have any sort of warranty on it, they should sort it for free :)

If it's taking a while to load your desktop, perhaps too many programs are set to open upon startup. I would try going to Start > Run type msconfig, then go to Startup, and assure no unneeded tasks are opening upon startup. You can also disable some tasks that error upon startup.

I think you messed up the computer with something.
Maybe a print screen could help me?

I did say above that I was taking it into the shop, which I have done, it needs a new hard drive.
