    Thumbs down Problem with XP!

    Hey,

I came back on to my laptop after being away for about 20 minutes and it was on standby. So I pressed the return key so it came back onto normal screen. I left it for 2 minutes whilst I sorted something and I came back and it had crashed. I couldn't do anything, start task manager, use my mouse so I turned in off.

I then turned it back on, but now I have to wait 10 minutes for the startup to load and then another 20+ minutes for the actual desktop to load.

I tried running a Restore but unfortunately its saying you cannot restore, to do this, restart the PC.

Anyway, I am using my laptop to write this thread but nothing has loaded like the Network Connection, MSN and the icons next to the clock. The browser and sometimes the desktop bar change to the really old style.

I have the drivers on disk so I am just backing them up and going to restart to see if that makes a difference. If not, do you have any suggestions or what may have caused this?

    Thanks

You might of damaged some files by turning it of,

i would recomend backing your needed stuff up, and re-installing.

Boot in safe mode (press F8 when booting up) and see what happens.

How would I go about re-installing it?

I booted in safe mode and I can't restore as it says the same thing as it does in normal mode.

Its still slow in safe mode and nothing I can really do.

If I can re-install some how then I suppose that would work. As I said, I have just copied the old drivers to the current ones and waiting for it to show the shutdown options (been waiting 5 minutes now).

Boot in safe mode, insert your xp backup disk (the one you made when you got the laptop) and scan for missing/damaged system files.

Once you have put your disk in click start > run > and type "sfc /scannow" (without the "'s)

Jesus it sounds like a standard bluescreen with crash-before, don't go through radical steps like these chumps are suggesting, just reboot your laptop as normal, should speed up.
