As my net speed is 48mbps instead of the usual 54. It drops to 48 when someone else is using it :S

Your computer may drop the speed a little to conserve power, or your router may do the same, there will be an option to set it to stop doing this.

Also, you could just be a little far from your router.

You won't notice any difference anyway unless your transfering files over your network, or you have a 54mbp/s internet connection haha

Go into the router's menu through your web browser and look at the DHCP client list.

What router do you have?

Some crappy Zwire one from BT.

It's been messing us about recently, nothing can hold an IP adress.

Do you know how to access the router settings page, yeah?

On that page, I have an option to view "attached devices" which does what you want.

I figured as much, I told my Dad we need a new one but he's worried about it as he doesn't think it'll be able to work with his laptop. He doesn't have any perms on it as it's a work one so he doesn't know if it'd pick it up.

It will work with his laptop, by perms, you mean he hasn't got Admin priviledges?

Erm think so.
Basically he's not aloud to install anything on it. He has to get the tech guys at head office to do everything

You don't need to install anything./

nothing, just tell your PCs/laptops to pick up the signal

Depends on the router. Some want a computer/laptop attached to it to start it up while some can do it wirelessly but you'll need to install it on a PC of some sort. With laptops, you never need to because the wireless hardware built-in should work with any wireless router.

Since when do routers need anything connected to them to boot them? We have never come accross this in all the routers we have had.

Seams strange, all the routers we have seam to have to be rebooted every couple of weeks, maybe they can't stand being left on 24/7 or something.

BT Voyagers need one to start them up first time, after that the reset buttons comes in handy :P Belkin Networks seem to like staying on 24/7, mine's always on and doesn't reset itself. But then again, it is on a very breezy, thin surface so it's not exactly going to heat up too easily :P
