View Full Version : Many movies to rise to 18 :@

Hey
Today some get-tough councils could raise movies which feature smoking (Cigarettes or cigars) to an 18 age rating. This would include teen favourites such as Hell Boy II, Mamma Mia! and The Dark Night.
If the plan goes ahead Britain could see other councils having local cinemas take up the idea and raise their age ratings. If this becomes widespread across the UK we could also see TV shows with smoking in moved to after 9PM.
It won't affect me as I'm in Northern Ireland and its some councils in the mainland. However I think this is stupid. Some movies are made to attract a teenage audience, they will flop if only 18+ can access them and many more teenagers would turn to illegal online streaming.
So what are your opinions?

What annoys me about this is the fact that the minimum age (by law) to smoke is 16 yet to buy and to watch apparently now is 18. And then obviously the fact that this makes no sense at all! :)

Probably due to there being no 16 age rating for movies.

The minimum age to smoke is 18 in the UK. It was raised in October 2007 innit.
And I doubt this will happen widespread or even at all. It would demolish the British Film Industry. All we would get is foreign imports. And anyway, all films would have to do is cut out about 2 seconds of footage, or digitally edit out the cigarette and all will be dandy. Im babbling. Did any of what I said make sense?

Yeah it did :P
Wasn't there an uproar recently about them editing Casablanca to remove the cigarettes from it? It's a stupid idea anyway, they should spend time fixing the economy instead of worrying about young people smoking.

Here we go again, government taking over our lives and we not allowed what we want to watch at the movies depending on age or what we want on TV. This is getting bloody stupid, I might as well live in the USA!

It's true. And the drinking age is actually 5 years old. But you just can't buy until you're 18.
And this is ridiculous tbh.

Pretty stupid to be honest, so I'm not allowed to watch my dad smoke till I'm 18?
We see smoking in every day life, making them 18 films isn't going to change anything.
Inseriousity.

LOL!! Our life is being controlled by maniacs who mention all these stupid rules yet they can't sort out the proper crimes such as knife crime etc. Probably because they're too hard for them and they'd have to get their hands dirty :(

There was a 21 certificate, but it didn't last.
That is rediculous and I don't think it'll go ahead, but doesn't affect me as I can see them, but it would anger me as it pretty much means certificates are worthless as they give an indication on what you can expect in a film.
And you can be 6 months old and smoke legally, you just have to be 18 and over to buy tobacco products and paraphernalia.

I'm sure that'd be child cruelty/endangerment as no 6 month old could smoke on their own nor want to.

Obviously, I was just highlighting the fact that it's still legal.

If this goes into affect this means Disney classics such as 101 Dalmatians, Peter Pan and Pinocchio would all rise to an 18 certificate.
How gay.
Its pretty mad tbh, and its not going to solve anything, just would mean more people would get pirate dvds or download them.
Didnt they get rid of the cigarettes in Tom and Jerry cartoons and replace them with hotdogs? I'm sure I heard that on the news.

Mother: "Lets go and watch Mama Mia!"
Child: "Yay, its started"
Mother: "COVER YOUR EYES CHILDREN SHES SMOKING!!"
Father: "NOOOOOOO!!"
What the hell is wrong with 'seeing someone smoke'?
This really is pathetic..

This won't happen. The film companies behind the films will go crazy if this action is taken and they have quite alot of power behind their films. Besides, the reason behind it is lame :P 12 year olds and 15 year olds won't start smoking because they see someone on the big screen smoking. They have banned smoking in Us and PGs though, I think.

It should be up to the person or the parent. If the parent allows the child to see it, it shouldn't be a problem. But I can see what they're trying to get at or do.
