Should I install Ubuntu? On my laptop (60GB HD), I have 33GB free space, would that be enough to dualboot with vista?

That's well enough, Ubuntu doesn't take up that much tbh. I think after you get Ubuntu, you'll remove Vista because it is a rather good operating system. My dad has it on his Mini 9 Netbook, and it's pretty versatile on 1GB RAM.

i have 2gb ram on mine; so i guess thats enough.

i probably won't remove vista if the drivers i need aren't on ubuntu (:

Most drivers are on Ubuntu, but you might be worth using VMWare for Vista. I'm trying to get XP and Ubuntu together, but I have a Vista laptop so I'm pretty stuck haha. 2GB RAM will send you flying, no doubt. :)

I'd see if you can find a free version of XP if you want to get rid of Vista. :P

Go for Ubuntu if you want to, don't do it if you don't.
You can try it via Live CD if you just want a feel for it...
I personally reckon you should Hackint0sh your PC, that is if you feel up to it. :)

Ubuntu is linux for beginners, it's a great operating system, it's free also.

I do recommend installing it, if you become to like, remove vista but dont wipe it off yet, until you if you develop a feel for it.

run it from a disk to start with, if you think it's worth it then install it on your system.

As long as I can get the OpenGL and Sound problem sorted, I'll be happy! I'll have to search Google again.

I recently made the switch to Ubuntu, and I couldn't be more happy really. I use seamless mode with XP and WINE to run any needed Windows applications. I used an application called Wubi to install Ubuntu. You run it from Windows, and it sets everything up for you to dual boot with XP/Vista.

If there's no alternatives to applications you want, you can use WINE to run them on Ubuntu. If you cannot get the application working with WINE, you can use a Virtual PC with seamless. It's good for everything besides playing games :P.

It's better to migrate from being a utter nub to more superior with linux, doesn't blank out as much on stupid kernel panics which ubuntu experiences if you type a wrong letter in a command, doesn't relay on crappy sudo. You get a proper linux feel with opensuse unlike being mothered with ubuntu.

Perhaps I'll install it on vBox and give it a go.

I compared the specs of that to the Toshiba L35 which has been OSX86'd and it has worked. Your specs are basically the same...
Good news is you should be able to get it running. Your video card seems the same as the L35.
Bad news is that people have had a lot of trouble with Realtek audio cards. And that a Hackintosh install is bloody hard, obviously.

If you use this link: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.5.2/Portables#Satellite_L35-S2174, a lot of Googling for drivers and tutorials for the Audio and Graphics card hacks... Well, an OS X Leopard install should be possible.

But it's really damn difficult to Hackintosh if you don't have 2 computers. You need to keep downloading things and transferring them...

My advice is go ahead, but keep your Recovery CD's or a Ubuntu CD for installing if this Hackintosh fails.

Maybe if the openSuSE installer would even load on my laptop instead of showing a black screen ;)

I like things rather straight forward, so I won't bother with OSx86 (:

You need to select Custom in the installation or it will want to install on the whole HD by default >.>

You don't need to install drivers... works out of the box for me (Also using Realtek HD Audio)

Can you put Ubuntu onto an External Hard Drive and boot from it?

Yes (assuming your BIOS supports it, which it should do).

Perhaps you have a faster connection than I do, for downloading 4.3GB with a 5Mbps connection doesn't complete in 30 minutes for me..although my file manager reports the file status as delayed, and it's been at 93% for a long time. I'm guessing Kget ran into a problem.

Try WuBi. It dual boots Windows and Linux without partitioning - when you want to un-install it, just head over to add/remove programs and uninstall WuBi.

You can get Wubi from wubi.com

I was just about to say that.

I use Wubi and it's really easy to set up and runs the same as Linux.

Thats when you click Manual Partition table on the partition screen.

If you can't install Ubuntu, then I dubt you could successfully get OSX86 working.
