Hey teenagers!

I have read the topic on "what do you want to be when your older" and I got to thinking about it.

If you are really intrested in a job, it actually starts now. If you stick in at school and get good grades you should be fine, although I want to try and help those who haven't got good grades, or school refusers etc.

If you refuse to go to school, bunk off, or just don't do well in school etc there are still educational courses that are more fun available to you!

I'm Scottish and when I was at school they called my school adviser my "pastrol care" teacher, in some places it might be "guidance teacher" or other. Well, if you arrange an appointment with your parents/gaudian along with the "pastrol/guidance" teacher and explain to them that you have been bunking/refusing to go to school although you still want to get some education, ask for a collage course for you. This means your allowed to leave school and go to a collage instead. You can go on courses to be a Technician, Maintenance Worker and various other courses that specialise in the basic aspects of job.

In Scotland we have a thing called "Choices4U" and that is another educational service, different from collage - this might be different in England, Ireland and Wales etc.

Below I will give you a idea of how it works;

I want to join the Army/RAF/Marines, but I've got nothing from school!
This is a common question, but there are ways around this. If you didn't go to school then try the collage idea, or if you don't like that and you're about to leave school with no qualifications then I can advise you take a basic english and maths course at your local collage. Just until you get qualified for a basic all round education.

I want to join the Police service, but I've got nothing from school!
I've heard this alot, but the collage course can really help your education. Or if you don't like the collage either and wont go to that and you're about to leave school I advise you to go to your local collage and get qualified for Modern English, Modern Maths, Modern French.

I want to be a Mechanic, but I've got nothing from school!
The collage course can really help as out of all the courses I know of they always have a Mechanic/Maintenance courses available. You will need modern maths and english - just basic education. If you apply for your local collage to educate you on English and Maths basic then you will be liable for the training.

CV's
Employers always look at CV's, and they aren't really intrested in "I go joggin" because thats just you're word for it! If you get involved with the community such as "I ran a local cross country jog" they will see your socially aware of whats going on around you. I'm Scottish as I've stated before and on my CV I have alot of community VOULANTARY work. Employers love people who work to make a difference - not work for their pay cheque!

Social Help for younger people!
To show your not a trouble maker, to show you have been interested in the job you're applying for its always a good idea to join places like "The Army Cadet Force" or "The Air Cadet Force" and also "The Police Cadet Force and Service". If the job you want doesn't own a cadet service then you should try and work in that place for "work expierence". This will be a great acheivement and they will really like it.

ALTERNATIVES
Go to school, work and study hard while doing some community work/cadets!

Me and how I acheived my Job! (warning: its a life story!)
I was a normal child at the beggining of nursery, primary school and secondary school. In primary six I started to get bullied. As a result I started to refuse to go school and kept the reason to myself. I stayed off school nearly every day for 4 years. When I got back permanantly in my third year of secondary school I had missed alot, I was in all the lowest educated classes. I got into the Army Cadets when I was 14 and reached Lance Corpal (rank) in a year. I looked into the Army when I was 15 and eventually persueded my father to sign a conract to get me out of my last year in school to join the army. I was dispatched to the middle East on my 18th birthday. Whilst I was in the warzone I acheived my Lance Corpral (rank) and driving licence and then came home due to a loss in the family (my aunt). I had only been away a year, so by this time I was 19. I thought to myself: "I seriously have to sort my life out". I got myself together and joined the local collage and passed my basic Modern maths, English and French course. I got myself a job as a security gaurd for a private company. They payed quite well. I worked nightshift so I was sleeping the best part of the day, but when I wasn't I tryed to do community events. I ran cross country and represented Glasgows South Jogging team. I got the Duke of Edinburgh award for voluntary work. I then started to look into the Police Service when I was 19 and a half. I eventually applied to be a Police Constable. I done a years probation, but when I started I was forced to give up my job as a security gaurd. I had to live off my parents until I was 20 and a half when I was officially classed a Police Officer. I now have my own flat, own car and my 2 dogs :-) Me and my colleague live together, yes shes a female but we're best friends!
The only bummer is that I'm single!

I hope I have helped you today.

Perhaps you should re-do school for that one. I advise you go on through collage and possibly university. That is a very hard job to do so you should get as much education as possible. If you read the post you'l notice that its basic jobs that everyone know about - thats because I never expected a teenager to have made up his/her mind to a job to that extent.

Well done mate, sounds like you got yourself in a nice way, out of interest what do you do on an average day in your current job, (If you are allowed to disclose) and what was the whole process of getting into your job. Just to add, good guide, sounds like you have really thought about it.

iAdam - Thank-you. I tryed hard to get out of a mess tbh :-) If your reffering to what do I do on the beat? I work from 4 in the morning til' 12 noon, sometimes I keep going til' around 9pm. I regularly remove incapable drunks from the streets at early hours and from 9am onwards it starts to get more action-packed. Nearly every day I get into a fight with people. Alot of officers claim thousands of pounds if someone fights back but in my humble opinion - why the hell would you sign up to be a POLICE OFFICER and expect to be treated like royalty. Obviously you will get into scruffles and the majority of the time it can be painful. In Glasgow we're (strathclyde police) are usually always fighting. Its a shame.

But yeah me and my partner (WPC Gibbons) are nice people - sympathetic. I'm not saying we're the best officers or the nicest because I have been rude at times - I wont deny.

The main reason for this post was to get young people educated about taking on the responsibility they should that maybe they don't know they have!

I admire your attitude towards the job, seems like you have a very good grasp on life, is there anything in your job where you have thought that you couldn't handle, for example for me it would be being vomitted on. I'm glad that you are 'down to earth' or so to speak in your job, and that you have taken the time to actually make this guide, it'll help alot of people I believe.

Oh and you can call me Adam. I don't mind.

Wow! Essay here aye ? I'll read it tomorrow if i have time, i have other things to do i had an interview with Connexions a couple of days ago at my School they told me all the stuff you need to do and what you need at the Job which you are doing he gave me a great load of advice. However i'm going to my local College over the road from my School basically then go to another College with is in Middlesbrough!!! So yeah, i want to go to 2 Colleges to get better and stuff thanks for the tips i'll read it as soon as possible

I will, from now on, call you Adam :-)
Well, thankfully, I've never been vomited on! :-) Which is brilliant.
Actaully, Yes. I have always dreaded someone dieing while I'm assisting them. Such as if I responded to a stabbing and when I got there he was alive then died - I would feel soo sorry for the family. I'd hate that.
The worst part of the job - which has happened to me on numerous occasions is, I've had to chap on a familys house door and break news that one of their children has died. I've done that 4 times now, each one was knife related. It is really undescribably sad for the family.

Yes, I've been told I'm a "good copper", which I am proud of. I wont deny the fact that there are officers who do brutalise and go a bit over the top within my force and that there are some idiots who think they are top man because they have a uniform, body gear and are licenced to assault people. I think thats just silly. - Taking physical action is last on my list but usually ends up the only alternative in the area I work.

I made the guide because I remember as a boy around (13-14) I wanted to be a chav. Although I got bullied I still was a bit of a trouble maker, which is probably why I got bullied. I had done alot of bad things. I heard the army could sort me out and qualifie me so I went for it and woha, they sorted me out right. So at that age I realised I wouldnt get a job and felt as though there was no help out there, but I looked it up and studied and I got there, eventually. I would never have got into the police without the Army.
Thanks for posting back, Adam!

Imosae - Yes, I did think about it :-) Yes mate, give it a read through before you make any final decisions. Connexions is a great way for teenagers to get back on track, really good that you got into collage. Brilliant mate.

Your life story is a bunch of lies.

It's rare to achieve Lance Corporal in your first year of full service after training.

If you did achieve this rank, you would respect it and honour it and not spell it 'Corpral'.

And it's extremely rare for any police force to accept someone under the age of 21.

Sorry but I don't buy it.

Hes not in the police..

He cant even spell let alone sort out trouble.

And he bigs up how hes always fighting..

As soon as the suspect gets violent you have to either back off, take him down, mace him or call back up.

At least make up a believable lie..

He also plays Habbo.

Thats easy.

I got a nvq2 in cookin. Took like 7 months to get and it was piece of wee. :]

NVQ is National Vocational Qualification.

Can be done through an apprenticeship, where people monitor you and judge you on how well you've done.
At the end of the course or assigntment, you will be awarded with a certificate proving you can cook, resulting in getting a job as a chef.

For those who dont know

Guys - I dont care if you think I'm in the Police service or not :-)
I don't brag about 'fighting'?

If the fight will put the public in serious danger then you should back off but if you think you could handle it there is no reason as to why you shouldnt.

To be a police officer you need a basic all round education or a relevant life expierence.

I was in the army and did a tour for 6 months in Iraq. That gave me a relevan life expierence. I then took a further educational course on Maths and Information Handling.

By basic all round education I mean foundation classes - the lowest :-)

P.S - I once knew a guy who was in the top of his English class and Maths class, he was also quite fit as far as I knew. He applied to be a police but he wasn't very wise as to deal with situations.

So basicly to be a police officer to apply you must have a basic all round education and/or a relevant life expierence and thats the criteria - further than that its up to the recruitment officer on your personality etc.

Also, you say I cant spell? Its called typos :-) As someone said on this forum, "is this a forum or a english class" why would you even bother scanning my text for mistakes? And you imply I'm sad? Haha, I'd rather laugh than reply but in this case it was irresistable to stop typing about this aspect of stupidity - on my job occupation and typos?

Also - Habbo is a way to spend my spare time whilst catching up with the teenage "lingo"?

edit: If you are going to ask "if you use habbo to pass time, why go on habbox?" .. the same reason you probably do - Habbox is fun and I think a better way of getting your point(s) across and meeting new Habbos.

You said you need to have grades or something to join the Police.

"There is no formal educational requirement, but you will have to pass written tests."
https://www.west-midlands.police.uk/wmprrecruit/wmpr200734173120.asp - I'd imagine this is the same for all forces in the United Kingdom.

First of all, I've looked at the tests (I'd post but can't find link) and all you have to do is answer simple mathmatical question in a certain amount of time. And you don't need A*'s to figure them out. They're really easy!

Regular Army
And you said you left school at 15 to join the army? You have to be ages 16-33 (Solider) you don't need any qualifications.

To be a officer you need to be ages 17-28 and only need "a minimum of 35 ALIS points for the best subjects at GCSE or equivalent"

Territorial Army
You need to be aged 17-43, no qualifications, and officer 17-33 and you need "a minimum of 35 ALIS points for the best subjects at GCSE or equivalent"

The exact age is 17 3 months.
So I'm confused?

You said you need to have grades or something to join the Police.

My responce: There is no educational requirement although you need a basic all round education - if you think that doesn't make sense then let me explain; the job doesn't require, for example, a high english grade - but it requires you to know the basics of it.

"There is no formal educational requirement, but you will have to pass written tests."

My responce: Without viewing the link I would imagine you'd probably find them easy as the tests are really easy, you can download examples from your local force website I believe.

Regular Army
And you said you left school at 15 to join the army? You have to be ages 16-33 (Solider) you don't need any qualifications.

My responce: I was 15 when I left school to join the infantry training. To do so I had to have my parent's permission.

To be a officer you need to be ages 17-28 and only need "a minimum of 35 ALIS points for the best subjects at GCSE or equivalent"

My responce: I wouldn't know as I wasn't a officer; I was a NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer).

Territorial Army
You need to be aged 17-43, no qualifications, and officer 17-33 and you need "a minimum of 35 ALIS points for the best subjects at GCSE or equivalent"

The exact age is 17 3 months.
So I'm confused?

My responce: The Territorial Army isn't what I was in. They don't go to war they just go on tour there. Although they train very heavily - explaining the age. They train in different aspects that may have a set legal age limit therefor to join the TA you have to be that age, I would imagine.

I hope I have helped, if not then feel free to contact me via pm or reply.
