Finally!

I got my ticket out of Tiscali, they called me today after the 7th day of not contacting me.

I am getting the 8mbps connection (16mbps for 3months) for £15 a month

is this a good deal?

Im sure were paying £10 for 10mbps from Virgin, it may be because of its in a large bundle package from them I am not sure but £15 sounds Ok-ish to me.

Sounds like you're on a package using your phoneline?

O2/Be* would have been a superior choice for a phoneline service. http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/index.jsp

Sounds pretty good for just £15 p/month.

At the moment I'm on their 50mb cable package and pay £51 per month.

I'm not talking about your phone service, I'm meaning the broadband cones to you over a telephone line. As long as you have a BT line it's fine :S.

There's two main types of internet connection in the UK. One is where you plug a modem/router into a phone line and the internet comes through there. The other is a cable service which is where there's cables running up your street under the pavement specifically for the service of providing internet and cable TV.

Virgin Media are the main company that uses cable services and their cable broadband service is very good. In area where they don't have cables up and down your street they offer a telephone service which works similarly to any other. It seems to me that you live in an area where Virgin only offer a telephone internet service, judging by the information you gave in your first post. Virgin Media's telephone line broadband service isn't very good which is why I recommended O2/Be* (www.broadband.o2.co.uk / www.bethere.co.uk) as their telephone line internet service is very good. This, however, is only if you live in one of their LLU enabled areas, but that's another story. Run the checkers on their websites and they'll tell you if it's available to you.

Edit: Unlucky :P.

I'm not going with Virgin as it costs a bit to much (£18) I can only get one service from them..

I may go with Sky, if they are good.

You probably do have a BT phone line, it's just it's with another company such as TalkTalk and the others, this still counts as a BT phone line. Go onto O2's website or Be*'s and put in your number for the tests, see if you can get it. Seriously, if you can get O2 or Be* jump at the chance, it's a lot better than Sky, Virgin and the other ones. My opinion of course but plenty of other peoples too.

I would recommend o2/Be to you! try their checker to see if you can get their services? It may work if you do not have a BT line.

For the extra speed you're going to get it's well worth the extra few pounds. I was 2MB maximum with Orange, on their up to 8MB package. I had enough so I moved to Be*. I now sync at 14MB downstream and 1.2MB upstream. How's that for extra speed!? :P

Do I have to cancel with Tiscali? I mean, how do I? How long will it take?

I would advise waiting for Virgin Media to come around and install your new service and once it's done and your connected than ring up Tiscali and just tell them you want to cancel your contract.

Atleast this way if something goes wrong with Virgin Media you will still have an internet connection.

Thats what I am doing.

Are Virgin any good? I have to wait 6 days for them, I am only there for the faster speeds.

Yeah I'm with them.
Although I have their cabled service which so far I have 0 complaints. Always recieved my max speeds which are extremely sexy got them coming on the 29th to install my 50MB's which I assume will be just as good as my 20MB's.

So yeah their defently good not sure about their 'National Services' but im sure their just as good.

Let us know what happens.

Unfortunally, I can only get there 'National Services' as I am in a very very rural area...

our exchange doesn't have cable compaitbility.. I think BT / Virgin are comign to sort our exchange out so we can have this soon...

If they do i'd 100% recommend their cable service.
I was with AOL who where completely terrible in terms of speed. Only reason I moved to Virgin because they offered the best speed for my area.

How much was you paying with Tiscali and for what speeds and what are you paying now with Virgin and for what speeds?
