Finally!
I got my ticket out of Tiscali, they called me today after the 7th day of not contacting me.
I am getting the 8mbps connection (16mbps for 3months) for £15 a month
is this a good deal?

Im sure were paying £10 for 10mbps from Virgin, it may be because of its in a large bundle package from them I am not sure but £15 sounds Ok-ish to me.
Sounds like you're on a package using your phoneline?
O2/Be* would have been a superior choice for a phoneline service. http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/index.jsp
Sounds pretty good for just £15 p/month.
At the moment I'm on their 50mb cable package and pay £51 per month.
I am not changing my phone service, my current phone suppiler is better.Sounds like you're on a package using your phoneline?

There's two main types of internet connection in the UK. One is where you plug a modem/router into a phone line and the internet comes through there. The other is a cable service which is where there's cables running up your street under the pavement specifically for the service of providing internet and cable TV.
Virgin Media are the main company that uses cable services and their cable broadband service is very good. In area where they don't have cables up and down your street they offer a telephone service which works similarly to any other. It seems to me that you live in an area where Virgin only offer a telephone internet service, judging by the information you gave in your first post. Virgin Media's telephone line broadband service isn't very good which is why I recommended O2/Be* (www.broadband.o2.co.uk / www.bethere.co.uk) as their telephone line internet service is very good. This, however, is only if you live in one of their LLU enabled areas, but that's another story. Run the checkers on their websites and they'll tell you if it's available to you.
Edit: Unlucky.
You probably do have a BT phone line, it's just it's with another company such as TalkTalk and the others, this still counts as a BT phone line. Go onto O2's website or Be*'s and put in your number for the tests, see if you can get it. Seriously, if you can get O2 or Be* jump at the chance, it's a lot better than Sky, Virgin and the other ones. My opinion of course but plenty of other peoples too.
