I've had a toothache thats coming and going every few months now, it's been causing me pain for 4-5 years now and I was stupid not to get it fixed when it occured. I really dont want to see the dentist. I know I am going to have to face him sometime though the whole dentist feeling gives me the creeps. The waiting room, the smell, the needles, blood. I have a huge phobia of blood and needles so that doesnt help either. My tooth at the back infront of the very back molar, was weak when I was born. It decayed and became a shell of a tooth after the filling came out. I was like 10 at this time so I was walking about with the shell of a tooth and no filling, the shell eventually started to break down and yes I brush my teeth twice a day. The only thing left of the tooth is the root of the tooth and a small upper part of the shell. I've been in so much pain these last few days but I cant find the courage inside of me to go the the dentist. Call me a wimp or whatever but it's probably one of the biggest phobias I have. Anyone any tips on how to overcome this and can I be put to sleep during a tooth extraction :(

Don't you be scared a'no dentist sugar!!! You gone' get yo' toothache fixed nice n' good alright? And if him don't know what to do then I'ma march to that dentist surgery and I'ma say to him and I'ma say "Holla mr dentist now see here you gone do good n' fix this boys tooth ya'hear?" Now hustle!
They won't put you to sleep just so they can pull your tooth out which will take 5 seconds, take the pain like a man and you won't have to take a needle, don't look at the blood?

You dont have a phobia of needles or blood. I gurantee you'd squeal with pain also if you got your tooth pulled without any anesthetics.

When I got my teeth extracted they gave me anaesthetics, but the needle for the injection was huge. And there wasn't really a lot of blood at the time of the extraction either. Basically what they do is give you the injection, let it settle in and then loosen it by pushing it from side to side. After it's loosened they'll wriggle it out slowly and you won't really feel a thing. I didn't feel it when it came out. Then what they do is give you a cotton ball to put in place of the tooth and absorb all the blood.
I guess what you should do is tell the dentist to do the injection on the other side of your vision or even get the nurse to cover your eyes or something.
In fact, can't you just fill it up again?

Bite down on a weave honeys, it always eases the pain.
I wouldn't, I've had my arm pulled out of the socket 4 times & fractured my ankle twice, I didn't 'squeal' - they can give you painkillers, I think by law they can only put you to sleep if you're getting root canal treatment or something big such as.

Nope, my mum got put to sleep when she had 4 fillings done, as she requested it.
My tooth is really sore at the moment, dont want to take too much painkillers incase I overdose though >_<
It's not like you're Spiffing and you're going to shove 32 paracetamols down your throat

My little brother was put to sleep whilst he had his tooth extracted, mainly because they didn't want to make him scared of the dentist when he was older.

Just think that you'll be pain free once it's over Paul. If you explain to your dentist before hand you have such phobias then (s)he will be bound to go easier with you baby. Girly pants.

Frankly I don't see why you should be put to sleep for a two-minute procedure. It doesn't hurt and you won't see any blood.

I fainted when I got a filling, thats how much of a phobia I have of blood.

I had to be put to sleep when I was 11 due to a huge fear and havent been since. I went 2 weeks ago, now 15, and my fear is there but I can cope with it. They put some bubblegum gel on my mouth before the injection, which I couldnt see due to sunglasses, and I felt nothing at all. The injection then stopped the pain during the 2 root fillings I only felt the like water jet thing but it didnt hurt
and yeah when I was 11 I had panick attacks at the dentist

You just gotta face it. Experience it once and hopefully you'll not fret anymore.

I think they can give you a 'gas' via a facemask to help you. It must be terrible for you with such a phobia. Only thing I can say is that Dentists are virtually painfree these days and an extraction is much better than a filling even. Perhaps you or someone like your mother could talk to the surgery in advance to get some advice? I am sure this happens all the time for them.
Take care. :)

Couple of years ago I had to have 2 teeth removed because I was having braces, first tooth I had with numbing, I didn't like the feeling of them yanking it out and I don't like injections, so I decided to have the second one done while asleep, had to go ages away to a special dentist place, they inject the stuff to put you asleep into your vein in your arm, luckily the dentist missed the vein the first time so I got 2 injections, one of the reasons I wanted sleep :l. Then when I woke up I had to go lie down in this room like some alcoholic, with about 5 other people who were swaying about like they had just drunk a bottle of neat vodka, then I got lifted out of the dentist by my mum, infront of aload of people in the waiting room, looking as if I had something wrong with me..
DONT DO ITTSDRTDGYTys
The sleep was nice but it was horrible :( and the dentist was this big fat scary gay bloke :(:(:(:(:(
ALSO the dentist scared me by saying "You might let out all your secrets while you are asleep"

If you have a tooth extraction, I think you can be put to sleep if you're really scared but you can also be sedated which is easier for you. I was sedated to have my tooth out and I didn't have a clue what wa going on, I didn't feel a thing and I didn't remember anything about it apart from asking to see the tooth when it came out lol
You just feel unstable on your feet and drunk afterwards but it wears off quite fast.
Dentists are horrible, I don't think anyone enjoys going to the dentist but unfortunately it is something we must all face if we want a healthy mouth and teeth. Basically, you either see a dentist or have awful teeth and suffer with painful toothaches for ages.
I hope you manage to conquer your fear and get to a dentist :)
There was blood when you got a filling? What did the dentist do, cut your gums?

You know they drill into your tooth and gums.

I don't know why people don't like going to the dentist. Personally, I'm fine with the experience and, even with the drilling and whatever, I don't see why people should be scared. It's not like they're going to kill you or anything.
Anyway, there is NO point whatsoever to get put to sleep for a two-minute procedure. The injection doesn't hurt, and whatever happens after that couldn't even be felt. I'm getting another two extractions soon (because of braces).

I'll take a fit, plus he might want to do some other dental work like fillings because like 2 of my fillings have fell out since the last time.
My teeth have never been drilled, he usually blows air into the thing does the filling then cleans it etc

Look, i had an abscess a few months ago, but before that i had toothache about the end of Feb, i thought it would go away, didn't realise it was really serious but about a month later it got really bad and went to the dentist, found out it was an abscess, and if you don't get something done about it it can be fatal, blood poisoning and kill you, don't put the dentist off, seriously it isn't worth the pain. You might either just get the tooth out or if it's a abscess, choice between root canal and getting it removed.

You'll simply have to over come your fears paul. If its been trouble for that long then you really need to get it sorted and over come them phobias if your in that much pain. They will probably give u valleum or something to knock you out if they do it.
Well, take better care of your teeth in the future

Paul they don't normally drill into my gums if i needed a filling :S Only the tooth
Paul i know i'm probs gonna make this alot worse for you now but
Since you're the age you are, they will probably use something like a chisel and push your tooth upwars which is seriously a pain in the *** but it only lasts like 5 secs, then they normally flick it out. Don't worry, you'll be fine
Done it with me

The pain from the toothache is gone now as I used bonjela, probably something to do with my gums. Im still going to go though to prevent it happening again.
:O Always go ASAP to the dentist if you have a reoccurring tooth ache. If you leave it too long you might need a root canal or something D; and it can spread to other teeth too.

It's always best to do this. I can't remember how old I was but this one time my mouth was hurting so much. So I went and he was trying to talk me into having them pulled out. I was really scared. I hated the dentist alot. But I just thought about it, took a few deep breaths and said o.k. I still don't like him but I've had no trouble from them teeth since, so it was worth it in the end.
