Right, I'm a bit of a computer noob when it comes to the hardware.

Basically, I have a piece of rubbish Dell PC which is on like 512MB of ram and worst processor than my current PC.

It's sitting next to my main PC and I wondered if there would be any way to connect my current PC to my Dell PC and use the Dell PC as storage.

Can this be achieved with ethernet?

+Rep to anything that helps me ;)

I would also like to know how can this work please :).

Edit: i been researching, it seems you can do it and it's called 'cluster' two computers together..

no idea tho lol

I kinda hope I can plug in an ethernet and run some sort of network software.

I'm running WinXP and will be running Win7 soon, If I were to make a file server I'd run Ubuntu on it probably, or some sort of LinuxOS.

Ye, the current PC needs to be a srever or some kind, I actully cba trying it out, i gotta go out now, and i see if i can be bothered to do it when i come back in lols.

Seems tricky seeing you need to be on a domain system for claster to work.. :/

Wouldnt it be good just getting DC++ (its a program) and connect them both up to one router? That might work, speeds wont be blistering but I'm sure it'd work? Try it out, me and my mates connect like 8 computers to one hub and use that to download eachothers movies and music.

Well I do have a cable that was used for my xbox coming from the router which I could use.

But I want it to be like a external hd, is that possible?

both on xp btw

You can do this but you would be better to mount the Hardrive in the Desktop.
Use Laplink gold or a network conenction and map the dell laptop as a network drive.

Yes, however this will not be possible until the release of Windows 7.. it has the facilities to create a home group of each computer and save data to and from the networked PC.

I downloaded 300GB via windows 7 from my XP machine. Download speeds were about 5.9MB as it is networked.

5.9MB/s ? That's pretty slow, is your XP machine IDE? Normally when I'm transferring files from one pc to another over a 100Mbit link it goes a lot faster :S

Well considering wireless to wired would cause that...

My computer is not that old :D IDE is in the 1990s... OOhhh I remember the old Dell Dimension Intel Pentium II processor with 256MB ram running Windows 98... Aha. G'd old days.

As far as making the experience feel like you're using just one computer, you can network share folders, and then install Synergy. It lets you you one mouse and keyboard plugged into one computer to control all the computers you want. It's great, and cross-platform.
