Well I recently applied for a job at Mcdonalds and was invited for a 'group interview' at the main restaraunt. There were about 5 sessions with each group consisting of 10 people, so there was around 50 people applying for a job in differnet restaraunts
At the interview we were told just to briefly say something about yourself for about 1 minute and then we were told you will receive an email in the next few days which will tell you if you get through to ANOTHER interview.
Next day, I received an email saying I didn't get the job. I was literally shocked that I didn't get through to an interview. I'd had work experience before by working at John Lewis and I'm expected to get A's and B's in my GCSE's this month. I presented myself very well; dressing in a shirt, black trousers and some black shoes (unlike some people).
My friends also applied and didn't even get to the group interview with their grades similar to mine.
Honestly, Mcdonalds hire slow and stupid on purpose and only hire a few people who know what they are actually doing! The process of getting a job there felt like I was applying for a job at MI9 with the amount of things you had to do.
I wouldn't have minded as much if I got rejected at the actual interview, however, honestly this has knocked my confidence of ever getting a job in the Police if I can't get a job at Mcdonalds! And Burgerking.. well.. I'd kill myself if I applied and got rejected from there!

I know of a few people who got rejected from there but I got a interview and turned it down (due to getting another job within the weeks between the offer + the actual interview). They don't hire stupid people on purpose though, I suppose its about who presents themselves well and is confident.

Maybe the other applicants had better experience than you?
I'm sure they didn't just not hire you because you're not stupid enough.

Most of the applicants there were around the same age at 16 and 17 looking for a first time job to fit around there work, so wouldn't really have had any experience before. Even if they did, the only thing that was discussed at the group interview was just small things about you i.e are you at college, what are your hobbies etc. So how they can judge from that I don't know.

If your getting A's and B's why you applying at McDonalds?

The job is fully flexible and so it would fit around college.

If your getting A's and B's why you applying at McDonalds?
Your lucky if you find a job, regardless of your grades. You jump at any opportunity you can.

GCSEs are irrelevant. A lot of the time it's because you don't match their shift requirements, unless you just weren't good enough of course.

If your getting A's and B's why you applying at McDonalds?
They hire you based on how competent and sociable you are, not because you passed a few easy exams. A lot of places are image conscious as well, especially clothing stores.

They mostly hire immigrants who can't speak much English because they'll work for minimum wage.

Don't take it personally. The fundamental reason you didn't get the job is due to the popularity of people applying there, it's summer, teens are free and want money and have nothing to do better. Obviously there were some candidates that are more comfortable with dealing with people which is what they need. You'll get a better job than those people who beat you that day in the future :)

I am not sure if that's true :S Certainly not down our way - they are mostly students. I think the thread is a bit off the mark here anyway. They hire
people that suit them - doesn't mean the people are stupid just more suited to that work.

They can hire who they want as such a global success. I'm sure they were just overwhelmed with your greatness they thought you were far to qualified.

I'll tell you the reason. It's because they are looking for people who are not likely to leave soon, and the fact you mentioned your A's and B's in your GCSE's means that you're likely to go off to University. People who don't have qualifications aren't really going to go anywhere, because they can't. It IS because you're too qualified. They don't want to invest time in people who might not be there for very long. So don't go doubting your confidence. I don't think I'd feel very good with myself if McDonald's WANTED me. Good luck!

Good grief shows how different it is in other parts of the UK.

In the macd near me all the people I've seen work there

1. Are nervous
2. Get the orders wrong most of the time (see 1.)
3. Look like they just got out of bed
4. Best job they're gonna get

Imo they save mcdonalds for the unfortunate when the unfortunate cannot get the bin man job

NIKKEE's got the right of it. I would bet money on the fact this is the reason they didn't hire you. I say this because the last time I applied for a retail job about 2 years ago it was at the new Apple store at my mall. I made it through the initial application cut based on prior work experience/grades, but then during the group interview they held I accidentally let slip something about University and after that they managed to get out of me that I was planning on attending a University that was in a different state, and that I'd be leaving for it in about 5-6 months. I was told two days later that I didn't make the cut, and trust me I was heartbroken when 2 weeks later I walked in to buy a keyboard cover for my mac and I found that this RIDICULOUSLY incompetent sounding woman who'd been a part of my group interview was working at the front as a greeter. I couldn't believe they'd picked her over me.. Until later when a friend of mine was hired as a manager and when I was chatting with him about potentially trying to get a job there for the summer and he told me that though he'd like to help me out he wasn't allowed to hire people if he knew they'd be quitting/leaving soon.

So yeah.. basically don't take it too hard that they didn't hire you. To be honest you would have hated working there and probably would have quit pretty soon. Are there any other jobs you could look into applying for? The key is to apply for a lot of them and though you might get turned down at a lot of them, eventually you'll find a job! I don't know where you live but if you've ever heard of craigslist it's what I used to find a job as a veterinary assistant last summer. I don't know how well used it is in the UK but its worth checking out. And seriously, don't take it too personally if you do get turned down. There are a million different reasons why they might not hire you, and the majority of them are just circumstance and chance and not due to any shortcomings of yours. You sound smart and capable and I don't doubt you'll manage to find a job eventually. :)

Well we do have a fair proportion of Eastern Europeans here and quite an ethnic minority where I live but its a university town as well.

Don't let this knock your confidence. Just remember that during this climate there are literally hundreds of people applying for any and every job they can find simply because its a job. Only the vast minority of applicants will ever get through, so unfortunately you'll be part of the majority that don't a few times. Its all part of the process, and its bound to happen. The moral of the story is to not give up, and just keep reminding yourself at least you're actually out there and trying your hardest to get a job, and not sitting back on your ass not caring. :8
