How hard is/was it for you to pick your choices :'(
I'm trying to use the process of elimination to narrow it down but it's far too hard. I can't decide what places I'd like. I wish I'd been more organised and visited more Universities because I want my application sent off next week. The only thing I know is that I want to do History, lol. Doesn't really help :eusa_wall
No matter where I go it's going to be a huge culture shock in comparison with where I currently live :P
its probably not thebest way to go about it but its the way im doing/did it. i used the university rankings board from the times, along with the subject table (put your subject in the subject box obv) then went from there. However, dont get too wrapped up in whats first second etc, compare the two tables and look at the employability percentages (graduate prospects)

yeah yeah that's what i'm doing but i'm really fussy about where i want to go too. you need 5 choices yeah, only two that i'm 80% on are warwick and edinburgh. when i suggest places people are like "no it's so rough" especially my dad lol :@
have you looked at: Durham, York, Exeter, Southampton, Leicester, Kent, LSE
Oh, and its extremely hard lol. Dont worry about places being rough and other people saying bad stuff. Every place is rough if you know where to look. Just make sure you visit places before you make unis your first and second choice
Immenseman
02-11-2009, 04:07 PM
yeah i remember thinking durham wanted A*s and if i get that or not i don't know. York and Leicester (Leicester is one of the places I'm told is relatively rough and is reknowned for racial tension) I'm thinking about. Exeter and Southampton are too close for my liking and my sister is currently at Kent so don't want to go there.
whhaaaaat durham want A*s!? As in Alevels? I thought only cambridge was the one wanting A*AA o.O Maybe you should look into it a bit more.

UCAS website has been my best friend for the last month or so. Although I have just looked again and it asks for AAA, I swear to god it said A*AA last time :'( Hmm, I don't reckon I'd get in though because I reckon a lot of people who apply to do History there will be Oxbridge rejects with their straight A*s, lol. I think Durham would be ideal for me otherwise.
Edit; I was thinking of UCL who ask for 1 A* http://search.ucas.com/cgi-bin/hsrun/search/search/StateId/Dtm1p3zkwl1ILkOObRYsaqZCRXrSq-UG6i/HAHTpage/search.HsEntryReq.run?n=1001148#CSRA

Have you looked at University of Nottingham or University of Sheffield. Both very good unis, in nice places. I know people at both and they love it.
I applied for sheffield, royal holloway, city uni london, portsmouth and bournemouth. The latter two being possible insurance unis with lower entry grades than my ideal choices.
Make sure you remember to include a couple of unis with lower requirements than what you are capable of incase of any unexpected muck up in exams.

Yeah Edinburgh is BBB which I better get to be honest lol.

Yeah Edinburgh is BBB which I better get to be honest lol.
I chose one that wanted BBC when I can get AAB purely based on my friend who needed AAB to get into his first choice and BBB to get into his second, majorly mucked up his exams and came out with BBD and didnt get into either.

02-11-2009, 05:13 PM
If I mess up and get worse than BBB then I can always go through clearing. Touch wood I will get at least AAB :)

Im in my first year of university and apllying for uni was a nightmare when trying to make choices! I wanted to live at home still for various different reasons, so I'm at a university up in Cambridge and I absolutely love it.
My advice is to visit the universitys that your putting on your applications, especially if your going to be living there. You dont want to not visit them and then go there hoping for the best that you'll like it from how it sounds - its a huuuge mistake trust me, you will only get a feel for the place if you go =]
Thats pretty much it really, try not to go by league tables to much either as it could be one of the "top" universities but it may not be the one for you =]
Good luck with it all! Hope this helps a bit.
Dundee for me :)
your going to uni in me??

3 choices to go.
Inseriousity.
02-11-2009, 08:50 PM
I based my choices on the grades I expected to get, the course content and what would interest me, location etc.
So many factors... argh but I finally did it :D
Sad3k..
02-11-2009, 09:02 PM
Yeah Edinburgh is BBB which I better get to be honest lol.
When Edinburgh say they want BBB its not always the truth told, many experiences are based on point systems such as getting good AS levels as well as GCSE's check the times site and look why they say dont pick Edinburgh uni. Its such a high uni and would rather take students with AAA than BBB

I think you choose a place which fits your personality foremost. I was going to apply to Warwick but I got told by many mates it was a raa kind of place which I detest so I never bothered and applied to some big bustling city uni's. Those type of places suited me when I visited them and narrowed my final choice down to which course content sounded the best.
Any possible History students out there who need the AAA requirements take into account some uni's are accommodating if you slip a grade or two, know many here at manc who did that aswell as ppl at Cardiff, Nottingham and Brum.

Must be quite annoying when that happens because if you make your mind up about where to go you can't accept/reject until they've all replied.
Warwick was where I really wanted to go too haha. You can? You just have to withdraw your application from the unis who havnt replied

couldn't u have gone thru clearing or w/e? that's what i'm gna do i just wna get out of devon and away. my uncle who is a lawyer (or summet) went to a random uni and he's loaded. you can still do well wherever you go
i tried going through clearing but every where i tried all the places had gone, or it was a course i really disliked. id prefer to take a year out and go somewhere i wasnt to go and do a course i want to do rather than not. Plus, accomodations expensiiiiiiveee and im well on my way to not having to get a job in my first year. so its actually worked out alright

its risky but its not. i mean, one of my mates went to southampton this year but dint have them as a firm or insurance but had applied there. they rang him on results day and said they really liked him in the interview and offered him a place. Just paid and sent my UCAS today.
Applied for:
Accounting and Finance at Newcastle (Partners scheme hopefully), Edinburgh and Durham.
Accounting at Northumbria and Strathclyde.
Hedging my bets on the Partners scheme as it'll really help to take the stress of exams, so Newcastle is my first choice and Northumbria my second, well, until I get offers anyways.
Good luck to everyone who's applied, as I know it's been an audeal :) I'm sure everyone will enjoy themselves wherever they go!

Haha, that's what's happened with my Sixth Form College as well, but they asked for mine straight away seeing as I did it in school.
Yeah, one of my friends has an interview for Cambridge tomorrow and he had some 12-page essay to do as well. Worth the hassle though, definitely. If UCL said that to her, then god knows what Oxbridge would've said :O seems a bit harsh like!

She did apply for Oxford but didn't get an interview. My other friend who got 12 A* at GCSE and 5 As at AS level didn't get an interview, lol. She got 90%+ in all of them, I think. I put it on there after I sent my app just out of curiousity tbh lol. It kinda knocked my confidence but 4/5 conditional offers (regardless of a really bad AS grade in the subject I'm applying for - RE. I got a D) makes me think that maybe some unis actually like to see the personal side of the statement where it's not robotic after being changed so many times.

07-12-2009, 05:49 PM
tbh though my mate said to me the other day "all personal statements are pretty much the same" it made me realise, that's the truth to a certain extent. i tried to make mine different and original but everyone includes the same sort of things so y'kno. i don't think they're THAT important. i think it'd be stupid to think like that because as long as it's decent it probably won't be remembered. it'll only be remembered if it's real bad imo. i'll post mine on here like next year if i'm still about and i see this sorta thread to help people out

I'm not so hot on the idea but teachers and my parents are pushing me to go to University. I'm hoping to go to either Sunderland (we have a house there), Leeds or Bradford (both about 20 minutes on the train). Sunderland is edging it due to it's reputation in media and my desire to work in marketing.

It's a joke my school. My head of 6th form told me if I got my form tutor to put my reference in on Friday he'd send it off before we break up on Wednesday. I told my form tutor this and he said he'll do it straight away. I check it today. Nothing, not even been put on. Im so pissed off atm with him because I gave my form 3 weeks ago to be checked and reference to be put in, he said he'll do it the same day and no, he's a lazy ****. Really annoying me. And If anyone says why didn't I send it off months ago, I had to wait for my predictions to go up which they did eventually.

13-12-2009, 12:51 AM
i think my college send them off in batches and possibly send them off every week or two as some people have offers and what not. they do check our applications though quite thoroughly as they sent mine back to me in november as i put my AS grades as A2 lol, and theres a lot of people who need to make changes who still haven't.
but nevertheless, it all came down to my form tutor who took the piss lol. he could of finished it late october/early november but no he waited until the last minute as my app has been all sorted for agessss just waited for him lol. but this is the same guy who told me in year 10 he wouldn't write my reference for uni because i refused to join the student council or summit when he asked me :l

I just looked at which unis had the course I wanted to do, then looked at each course and what was involved and which sounded most interesting, and then chose the top 5 by looking at which were the top 5 on the university rankings on times online. I also put in one with quite low grades incase I do mess up.
So far, I've had an invitation to an interview at University of Essex. So much for not having to go to any interviews because that's what a personal statement is for, form tutor.
Out of the unis I picked, the best ones look like Sussex and Hull to me. Sussex definately had the most interesting looking course.
In the end, I went for Games Design and Development... because that just seemed like the most fun thing to learn, in my opinion. It's not life changing, but it has a pretty huge industry. My final choices were UWE, Sussex, Hull, Essex and Bradford.
