View Full Version : iMac?
Im getting one for xmas and Im wondering what are the key stuff on it that makes it superior to the PC, I don't want a pc v mac fanboy fight here.
Thread Closed by Jamesy (Forum Super Moderator): The user wanted feedback on his choice - not an OS war. Thread off topic and full of arguments.

Nothing makes it superior to the PC in any way, all aspects of the PC are superior to the Mac.
From construction of the parts down to manufacturers, to the materials used, everything on a PC is better than a Mac provided you choose the correct parts and don't just go for budget this and budget that.
Gigabyte motherboards are world renowned for their stability and performance, as is Asus. Corsair are world renowned for stability in their RAM and PSUs, as are Cooler Master for their PSUs, Intel are world renowned for their extremely high quality SSD line-up. Seagate, WD and Samsung are world renowned for their high quality HDD line-up and Samsung is of course known for their high quality TVs and monitors.
High quality is just a matter of asking people who know what they're going on about.
I refuse to comment about the software side of things.

UI Design, UI Consistency, Included Software, no bloatware or crapware pre-installed like a lot of OEM machines, the design of the actual products, the simplicity and ease of use to do various tasks, everything 'just works'. I didn't want to use the last bit but I had to, because it's true. :)

Everything "just works" with Windows 7.

crapware like ilife?
so apparently the main selling point of the mac is cos it looks good according to you? oh dear.

The only reason I would ever purchase a Mac is because they look good. No other reason what so ever. Some of the software that comes pre-installed with mac's are good but you can obviously buy software that is just as good for the PC. Have fun with your mac!

Agree, the PC is more compatible with daily life, but the Apple products look good. You can't say the iMac's hardware is better, because it isn't. You can't say the build quality is better, because it depends who builds the PC on the quality. The software, you can get similar software on a PC and on a Mac, therefore both are equal in aspects.

Stupid comment. He doesn't need to ever of owned a Mac :/ Hardware - anyone can compare the two and it appears to be common knowledge now that hardware on a Mac can be bought for a cheaper on a PC, Apple ship off their extras at rip-off prices. PCs are more compatible with "daily life" - gaming, office, media and so forth (common sense, they do more and are backed by millions of companies building their own programs and software to enhance the computer experience). Build quality isn't better, the design may arguably be better (down to opinion), but build quality isn't necessarily better, especially as it is common knowledge that there are more PC companies out there making PCs than Macs- that's about a million against 1 (Apple). And you can get similar software on a PC and a Mac, both are equal in that area and both usually have the ultimate software compatibility e.g. Office, Photoshop etc. :/

I made the change from PC to Mac recently and will tell you what is so good about an iMac.
Quick, simple, easy and fun to use operating system, it looks good, the build quality is amazing, you can download many wicked apps, can't really get any viruses, it just works (haha), freezes far less than windows machines (from my experience and I think it's safe to say they do officially tend to freeze less on a whole) will work great with your iPhone (if you have one), you see a lot of professionals or well off people on TV using them, they have the Apple Logo (not that you buy it for that, it is just a bonus) and many more. I still can't believe that all them times I had the cash to buy a new computer I went out and bought a PC. I might of always bought better PC's (£1000 and up) but when in comparison to Mac's they are just blown away. I love my Mac so much I gave it a name, it's called Robert.

But I have a question, how can an operating system be fun to use? It is just there to be a butler and serve up applications if you will. An OS cannot, isn't, will not, was never etc. fun to use. And in regard to freezing, Windows 7 hasn't frozen once since I downloaded Release Candidate 1. And AFAIK, the iPhone works just as well on Windows as it does on Macintosh. As said, Windows 7 just works, and yes, yes there are Mac viruses.
I own a Windows 7 machine and a MacBook, which one do I dualboot Windows and Mac OS X 10.6 on? Oh look, the MacBook, because Apple's ballsy, "polished to the core" OS doesn't do everything I want it to do, well its fine for designing, coding, word processing, general use etc., but to get the Nvidia 9400M to put out, I have to run Windows.
Love XCode by the way, means even a newbie can code up a Twitter App (even if it is ugly) over at www.tweetsee.intweet.net (http://www.tweetsee.intweet.net) (shameless plug)
I agree. I've had 3 kernal panics on my MacBook since I've had it. I've never had a BSOD on Windows 7. Plus, when OS X freeses and gives you the spinning beach ball of death, as I like to call it, you cannot do anything until it decides it's sorted itself out. If Windows has to do something like that at least it doesn't completely lock up while it does it.
Also, I find things "just work" much more often for me on Windows.
It's proven that the build quality and hardware is no more (or less) reliable than the hardware of any other OEM PC or notebook manufacturer.

You should watch the advertisements Apple have made, even though PC owners don't like it, Mac's JUST WORK. Everything flows continually, unlike PC's which are like oil and water, they are just stubborn and have errors, get viruses, bloatware, come in 500 different pieces and look ugly. Give yourself piece of mind, get a mac :)

A Pontiac (judging by Google) is a car, so it drives like a car :/ What's your point? An iMac or any Mac is just a computer, a computer works the same way but different OS' (or companies even) have difference takes on how to use one. The components of a Mac aren't at all different to any other PC company, the only difference is you get ripped off by Apple with no justification for the price.
Even though he's right.
Those adverts are for stupid people. Like putting a stupid sausage on the end of a stupid fishing rod sitting by the end of a stupid pier into a pool of stupid people in the hope to catch some, and strangely they do work, but only exist in America where they're not banned for false advertising and challenging human intelligence. We've had this discussion before dear, a Mac is limited. A PC isn't as limited ;)

an iMac is hardware wise like any other all in one. You're trying to sing my song without knowing the words now. You cannot (CANNOT) say a Mac is limited when you have not given OS X a fair shake. And just saying "A Mac is limited a PC isn't as limited" is a very pointless statement when you haven't backed it up with facts.

No, I said it drives like a car... Cars are driven and work in a very similar way to each other, and all have key components - gearbox (peripherals), engine (CPU), wheels (RAM?), radio (closest thing to an HDD to be honest :P) and a dashboard (GUI). An OS/x, Windows or Linux machine works the same way as the counter-parts, they're not different in that sense, they just do things differently :/ And judging by the Apple website, you are pretty much being ripped off if you dare change anything in the extras and order page. 2TB HDD at £200? My word, what a bargain AND 16GB of RAM for over £1,000? I believe I have just wet myself in delight for such a bargain bucket. By all means, they can charge whatever they want for the design and the OS, but that much for hardware that you can buy for cheaper? My word :S

*looks through his most used programs and sees the one he uses for work is incompatible with a Mac, and that a Mac is terrible for presentations*
Done. I've used a MacBook for a presentation, not only was the poorly designed machine terrible to hook up to a projector (it needed a silly little adapter, thankfully the person who supplied it had one), it didn't understand the red spectrum so anything on the projector (which was mostly brown) came up in green... And generic laser pointers don't want to work with it, you had to run to click a button on the MacBook to play a video. Strangely, the two Acers I've used do a better job :/[/quote]

And yes, I really do. Companies who have to fall to attacking another company annoy me. In the UK we have ASDA adverts which literally belittle the competition, yet don't provide any information as to what product are cheaper. They generally are cheaper, but the brand name items aren't. Thankfully Tesco retaliated by showing in their adverts that their basket shops are generally cheaper (they see what people buy in baskets (10 items max) and make up offers).

I have no problem, absolutely no problem at all discussing flaws with Apple, and flaws with Microsoft, with someone who genuinely knows what they're talking about, and can back up their subjective opinions with experience with both companies. These people like ***** make posts that I (for the most part) see where they're coming from, and even agree with. But with what you're doing in this thread I can't find any truth, besides Apple being overpriced (which they usually are). From my point of view you own a Windows machine, and because of this you want what you have to be the best, not this "Apple stuff", which (no offense) I don't think you gave a good chance at using. I've had decent discussions with you about this stuff before, but this is very much so below your standards of reason and justification for your reason. I have some horror stories with some Dell machines running Windows doing some presentations myself(and the problems I had with those presentations actually related to the operating system and the machine itself, not because I was doing something wrong). I don't think any less of Dell or Windows for those experiences.

I've had an imac, vista laptop and 7 laptop.
im still using my imac and my 7 laptop.
i think windows 7 is good, not quite as good as OS X imo, but definately a massive improvement on vista. I would use XP over Vista any day. Vista is like Windows ME, horrible.
OS X is really good in my opinion and only now is it beginning to slow (mostly to do with new programs being written for only the intel macs, power pcs are becoming extinct. I had no problem with OS X plugging in a midi keyboard and it working fine, but then did the same on my VISTA and 7 machine and no-can-do.
I honestly prefer the iMac, mostly because its OS is top quality (i bet some Linux users disagree but i tried a few distros but tbh getting everything to work takes the piss) and i think it utilises its resources better because the OS is developed with the hardware in mind rather than in Windows' case where hardware can vary alot.
I'd rather have a mac pro than a PC tower any day. One can customise it their way.

I'm glad to see you've looked past the nonsense in this thread and have come to a solid conclusion.
I can't say I'm impressed with a lot of the remarks being made in the tech section lately. People have got to understand that different people have different standards. For example, this thread was about a user asking for pros concerning a specific computer. But instead the anti-apples discovered that the computer in question was an iMac, and because of this they have taken it upon themselves to completely trash everything Apple, which has the opposite affect of helping you learn about OS X.
I sympathise with you, especially since you said you didn't want a Mac vs PC fight going on here. You just wanted pros on a specific machine. A similar thread could be posted in the Windows section, and no argument would have happend. An Argument only started when people refused to accept that some people prefer something different than that person preferred. These troll posts aren't wanted, and they're just going to cause once genuine threads to be locked.

I DIDN'T RUIN IT :O It was just a bad example :P
Cars handle differently, indeed, but they do the same business which is where the example drives off into a hedge :P A Vauxhall has a different gearbox than a Ford car, reverse is where 6th Gear is while in a Vauxhall you pull up on the gear stick (or down) to go into reverse :P He doesn't have to have a Mac or use one everyday to know how they work, they do what every other computer does and are made from the same components, the only major difference is the GUI and specifically the OS :)
Fortunately I'm not stupid enough to pay $1,200 for their monitors, when I can get about 5 of the same ones from LG. Their iMacs in Canada are not expensive. Of course you're not stupid enough, you're managing fine typing on a magic light box and don't appear to have to stop every few seconds to remember how to breathe :P Though speaking of which, Macs still cost alot in any country. Tech stuff here maybe expensive, but in the US an iMac is still alot more than a PC, so changing the country doesn't really do much, prices are cheaper, but prices are cheaper across the board, not just for Apple gear :/ And what you said is common sense, programs designed for OS X won't work on a Windows machine, I don't see why you typed that, it's like saying a USB cable won't go in a 3-pin socket or aa Wii game won't work on a PS3...
Ooh you used it for A presentation. I didn't realize using it once when you probably didn't know what you were doing (which is understandable since you never used it before that) makes you an expert on all things Mac.
I never said I was an expert, don't put words in my mouth just because you can't think of a good come back  If a Mac can't have something plugged in and "JUST WORK", then they're terrible machines and the Apple marketing ploy fails. At least a cheap, Acer laptop running XP can get plugged into a projector and "JUST WORK". I know what I was doing, you just plug it in and it should "JUST WORK", but it didn't, the quality was terrible and the settings for the projector made no difference, but it was so long ago that changing the settings seems irrelevant, it should either just work, or not work at all, it worked, but the colour should not lack the red spectrum, nor should the "plug and play crap" not understand itself
You think Apple's bad because of their ads? Microsoft tried to copyright keys on a keyboard. Go complain about that;).
Again, you do this typical ploy to divert away from the central argument (which suggests you agree their adverts suck) :/ Their adverts are crap, so why are you suggesting on having an Apple Adverts versus Microsoft and their crazy lawsuits and copyright schemes argument? Both cannot be compared, so a pointless discussion trying to divert away from the central argument to be fair :/

And this is where you fail your argument, saying I apparently have to waste my money to actually make an argument. I've used them briefly on countless times, but according to your barmy logic "this is not enough" and you claw away at this pretending this is where I have no clue... Your only claim to making a point, let's face it, on a simple argument, is that you attempt to deny with this "I owns one, I is better than you attitude", which is quite pathetic ;) If a Mac, a machine that only comes from one company, cannot do one simple task, then they are crap. If OS X was like Windows, an OS installed on hundreds of different machines by different companies using difference hardware, then I'd agree -but no a Mac only comes in one form from one company, if Apple failed with one machine then it doesn't bode well with the others, especially when this "plug and play crap" is meant to "just work", which it doesn't. Whoever invented these rediculous adapters in a ploy to make more money in poor workmanship probably needs a punch in the face - a projector should just plug in and work, not plug into something, oh wait, you need to buy one, then plug into the machine and not work properly.
And again, wild assumptions that are apparently down to me, and not a crappy machine ;) Again, I point you to the "JUST WORK" slogan Apple falsely plant on their machines. It should "just work", and I know how to plug and projector into a laptop or any sort of machine, it's just a shame the OS and the machine is so crap it can't even work properly. So glad it didn't have to be plugged into the sound system, I'd hate to hear what mess would come out of it
And I can't believe you based your conclusion on a post containing generic slobber, Jord :P

You do have to own one to be able to speculate on the OS. If you don't own it you don't know how it's going to be in a productive environment, not to mention the fact that if you use it once in a presentation you probably don't know how to fully use it, or know its potential :P.
Of course you're not stupid enough, you're managing fine typing on a magic light box and don't appear to have to stop every few seconds to remember how to breathe :P Though speaking of which, Macs still cost alot in any country. Tech stuff here maybe expensive, but in the US an iMac is still alot more than a PC, so changing the country doesn't really do much, prices are cheaper, but prices are cheaper across the board, not just for Apple gear
For two grand Canadian I can get a 27" (high DPI screen too) iMac with the i7. That's a extremely reasonable price for an AIO.
:/ And what you said is common sense, programs designed for OS X won't work on a Windows machine, I don't see why you typed that, it's like saying a USB cable won't go in a 3-pin socket or aa Wii game won't work on a PS3...
You said all your Windows programs wont work on OS X. Obviously they wont. There's separate applications for OS X. Some might be cross platform compatible, but OS X has developers too. I've never felt limited after using OS X for over a year when it comes to needing a program.
I never said I was an expert, don't put words in my mouth just because you can't think of a good come back  If a Mac can't have something plugged in and "JUST WORK", then they're terrible machines and the Apple marketing ploy fails.
No, with that comparison they're saying their operating system is more stable than the competition. It's like how phone companies say their network is most reliable. When it comes to things like this opinions on which is really the best are all subjective.
If you're seriously trying to suggest that it's OS X's fault that the projector was projecting a green image then you really don't know about your own example. Obviously the fault is with the items you used to hook up to the projector, not the Mac. That's like blaming your cat for the gaping hole in the ceiling. The two things are totally unrelated. (Note: when I plug a projector into my iMac there's no driver dialogues opening up wanting drivers. It just works!)
And this is where you fail your argument, saying I apparently have to waste my money to actually make an argument. I've used them briefly on countless times, but according to your barmy logic "this is not enough" and you claw away at this pretending this is where I have no clue...
Your Mac experience with the projector is proof that you do not have sufficient evidence to support your antiapple story.
Your only claim to making a point, let's face it, on a simple argument, is that you attempt to deny with this "I owns one, I is better than you attitude", which is quite pathetic ;)
Not true. Most Windows users who insult the competition do so because they want what they have to be the best. Not saying there's not Mac users who do it too. There's just a lot more Windows users out there so it's more common amongst them.
If a Mac, a machine that only comes from one company, cannot do one simple task, then they are crap. If OS X was like Windows, an OS installed on hundreds of different machines by different companies using difference hardware, then I'd agree -but no a Mac only comes in one form from one company,
Oh that's funny. I think if My Mac couldn't do "one simple task" you'd think I would have noticed in the past year+ since I have been using OS X. But I'll take what you're saying as legit because you used OS X in ONE whole presentation. You have loads of experience to back this statement up!!!!
if Apple failed with one machine then it doesn't bode well with the others, especially when this "plug and play crap" is meant to "just work", which it doesn't. Whoever invented these rediculous adapters in a ploy to make more money in poor workmanship probably needs a punch in the face - a projector should just plug in and work, not plug into something, oh wait, you need to buy one, then plug into the machine and not work properly.
I like the adapters. I can easily walk into a store that sells Apple equipment and buy adapters to plug my iMac into HDMI, DVI, VGA, composite, s-video. To do so on my laptop I first have to make sure the graphics card can handle it, and then I have to purchase a special adapter from a place like eBay or newegg. Not as convenient.
And again, wild assumptions that are apparently down to me, and not a crappy machine ;) Again, I point you to the "JUST WORK" slogan Apple falsely plant on their machines. Clearly you were sleeping during the entire Vista situation ;)
And I can't believe you based your conclusion on a post containing generic slobber, Jord :P
I didn't. It was an honest conclusion.
