What are your pet peeves in terms of bad spelling or grammar? Which common words do you have trouble spelling or remembering which one is right? (witch won is rite)
People using are instead of our.

I agree with all of them on that. My main source of problem is mainly that I mis-spell 'me' as 'my' because my fingers don't listen to my brain.

I cannot spell the word 'apparently' no matter how much I try (I just used a spell checker :P).
And frankly I'm still confused between affect/effect.

I have some sort of internal method for telling when to use affect or effect, but I'm not sure how to describe it!

i enjoy following people who cant spell on Twitter. always made me laugh. it's ridiculous how they can go on about how intelligent they are and they cant even spell intelligent.
My biggest pet peeve, which makes me strike down people into oblivion, is mixing 'your' and 'you're'... it really gets me.

Affect is a verb
Effect is a noun

Haha this is great. My English teacher used to always go on about the misuse of apostrophes. It only really annoys me when companies do it though, for example in Asda you might see a sign that says CD's but when a person does it online I just laugh at them really.

You're and your.
Their, there and they're
Affect and effect.
There's more but I can't be bothered to think atm, I hate it when people get it wrong though.

I get confused with its and it's :( And apparently.
It also annoys me when people talk about the Union Jack: It's called the Union Flag unless it's on a boat in which case you can call it the Union Jack all you want. Even the BBC do this :(

Oh yeah, haha. The BBC do that, yet they had a "pronunciation expert" on the news the other morning to discuss what the year 2010 should be referred to as . I was just sitting there not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

I can say I have not had a problem with any of those words or doodads in quite some time. The last one to be sorted was a lot.

The BBC are going to keep an eye on which the public are using ad try to follow it rather than be the ones who determine it.
I think they should just either say; the number is two-thousand-and-ten so that should be its official name OR; we've always said nineteen-ninety-nine so just use that when in doubt. But at the end of the day, people can say what they want.
Worst and most common is alot!!! Aswell is also mispelt a lot too lol.
It's I normally spell its because I cba to use some punctuation
Ooh and.. Bought and brought. 'i brought a game today'..

*cough* 'Totally' not 'totality'
I didn't know about the Union Flag/Jack thing until Rose on Dr Who said it and I looked it up. What's it called when it's part of the Australian flag?
I made this about apostrophes.

Yeah I always type things wrong if I'm not paying attention but it's not like I don't understand them nor would I do it when writing or typing something important.
The union jack... http://www.anbg.gov.au/oz/flag-union.html
No... it's the Union Flag as someone above explained. If that's an official government web page, then it's embarrassing (embarrassing is one I get wrong actually :P).

... yes? Its the same thing, really. And we call it the Union Jack.
The Australian flag uses three prominent symbols: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Star) (also the Federation Star) and the Southern Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crux) (or Crux).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Australia#cite_note-af23-0)

So that's probably why I'm confused. It could be the Union Flag in the UK, and the Union Jack at Sea and on colony flags?

'Definitely' is the only one I always get wrong. I spell it definately because I sound it out in my head as deaf-ine-a-telly. owell.

Mine is "they're their and when" I have been failing at them for three weeks!
TheEclipse
03-01-2010, 01:25 AM
Anyone got any tips for they're, their and there?
(I assume you meant there not when)
They're means 'they are'. "They're going to the park".
Their means 'belonging to them'. "Their clothes were stolen while they were swimming in the fountain"
There is a location. "They found the clothes there, by the playground"

It's the Union Jack when it is on a ship's mast. Otherwise it's the Union Flag. Blinger's own source mentioned it lol.

Look at the second paragraph.
AusFlag's campaign to remove the Union Jack is backed by prominent Australians including journalist Ray Martin and footballer Ron Barassi.
