Read this article (contains spoilers) and you'll figure out why - http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/soaps/2875312/Coronation-Street-plot-sees-Tracy-Barlow-frame-Gail-McIntyre-for-murder.html

You'd have to suspend your disbelief to be a fan of soaps. At least it's no where near the level of outrageousness as EastEnders.

This is the reason I never watch any soaps. They present life in a very negative and false way.

tbh it would be boring if you just watched some oaps drinks some tea all day.
Plus lesbians > reality.
I am not a fan of soaps personally, and I do find them outrageously lacking in realism most of the time, but that is absolutely audacious! Far more audacious than anything that has happened in Eastenders before :P. Yeah the amount of things that happen in any soap on a regular basis is ridiculous (i.e. affairs, murders, fights etc in just one episode!) but they do happen in real life in some places, spread out. This would just never happen.

Where do people watch OAPS drinking tea all day? They do portray different elements in society I agree but they are so OTT it is unbelievable.

Old persons home.
Anyway the actual reasons any TV show has to be surreal is because if it's too realistic you might aswell get on with your own life as it will be twice as fun as watching your own life :L

EastEnders = having a character's storyline built for an entire year only for her to be abruptly killed off in the worst death captured on film.

IN ALL FAIRNESS TO EASTENDERS FOR ANY BASHERS OUT THERE
It is the funniest of all soaps.

I disagree. The few times I've caught Coronation Street, it's always been pretty funny. The Morris storyline with the woman who obsesses over him is hilarious.

I think most of the time they are being extreme with a lot of the story lines because they don't always have a lot of time to do a story and because they try to tackle real life issues and if they was to go about it all light and not really cover the subject people wouldn't really recognize what they're saying.
I think that when you watch a 'soap opera' the name should say that it will be loud and turbulent most of the time and we all know that most things in a soap opera but they can't really be in Devon one moment, London the next so they normally try and diversify it as much as possible which I think most of the time is good.

Anyway, I gave up on this, Hollyoaks is better imo.

You have to expect them to be unrealistic, they're about drama. Considering the top 3 soaps average circa 10 million viewers per episode, about 40% of the viewing public, they must be doing something right.

I wasn't saying they were doing anything wrong / got poor amounts of viewers. So that's somewhat irrelevant. I don't expect them to be realistic either, in terms that the number of things that happen in the space of time it does happen isn't realistic at all (x amount of murders in a year, x amount of affairs and x amount of other dramas in one street!) but they're all reflective of what could happen somewhere. This is just stupid.
