Why does racism exist?

while ever humans roam the earth, racism is going to exist - it's as simple as that

it could be something to do with our earlier ancestry, for example protecting our land & territory

Tribal mentality is instinctive. Same reason you have homophobia, sexism, ageism etc. People do not like what is different and have a 'them and us' perspective.

Well, back in history when people in this country thought this country was all the world consisted of, so when other people did appear and they were of different ethnicity, they simply didn't like the difference, which is why these people were treated inferior in my opinion

Mhm, I just think others have been conditioned to believe that black people are inferior and it has just spread. The fact people know racism is acceptable and exists in other places makes racism is a problem in more liberal countries.

I was thinking about this long and hard. One idea I came up with sounds quite credible.

When you are furious at another person, you like to shout and swear at them and call them the worst names possible, or try to insult them in some way, and thus make them feel bad. A white person to a white person is not going to say "you stupid white scum" because they are both white, so the guy would be insulting himself. Instead they'd most likely call them an *REMOVED* idiot and a word begnning with w, rhymes with banker. Now, a white person to a black person (or any other two different races) would say "ah you stupid ****** *******" or something like that, to try and be insulting and make them feel like they're scum. People try and pick faults with others, for example if somebody is disabled they would use that against them, or if they were mentally ******ed. The person being racist may not believe that other races are inferior to their own, they may simply be trying to pick a fault and find none, so they use something that's different to themselves to insult the person with.

I am not making up excuses for racism, it's just a thought I had whilst in the shower.

I think black and white people should live in the same country and stuff but I understand where they're coming from. Then I watched a film called This Is England and that guy got it off that. ;lll

Yeah, Exactly it pisses me off how people always moan and say "the foreigners steal our jobs." Maybe looks for a job?

I don't know but anytime if I say I hate someone whos black for no reason people always call me a racist but if I say I hate someone whos white for no reason thats perfectly fine, I don't understand racism. I hate allot of black people but then again I like allot, I mainly hate loads of black people because when I see them in the clubs they look about 40 and their grinding up against 18 year old girls, they look terrified, its vile.

Most of the black people I have spoke to are extremely rude but then you got a few who are really nice.

because people have bad experiences with someone of another race and then become prejudiced towards everyone of that race and make sweeping generalisations about them and then influence others to do the same.

and to say there's such thing as a 'british' job is just a joke. why should a job be allocated to you because you are of a particular nationality/race. Get more qualified, get better training and expect to be be paid FAIR wages, not hugely inflated ones.

The worlds workforce in general works on very low wages also compared with the Western World, infact the United Kingdom is far ahead in terms of personal wealth compared to many what you would call 'developed countries'. It may be a generalisation but its a rather accurate one at that considering it was a one-sentence remark.

I didnt say illegally, I said that most people who come here (especially concerning Eastern Europe) are on low wages.

There is a difference between working legally on low wages and working on £2.50 per hour (and therefore illegally).

I replied that most foreigners do work for lower wages therefore what Wig was saying is mainly true although again, he is generalising with both workers and the figure he gave. Quite a few from Poland do, yes. However, if businesses need just labour, why would they pay high wages when they can pay the minimum wage to a Polish person who is willing to work at that rate? I volunteered at a care home last year for several months and it was full of Polish nurses. I went to Nottingham for a week to volunteer at Vitalise and it was full of nurses from Poland.

I think it stems from slavery when people saw people of a different colour and assumed they weren't the same/human and exploited them for it. That's just black and white though, it's generally just because people aren't comfortable with people that are different.

Back on topic, I agree its due to the slavery. Some people think they are better than brown people because their own English is better or just because they are white.
I know several reasons why some Muslims dislike white people but I wont state them on the forum. Hitman knows what they are as we had a good discussion via PM.
