View Full Version : E3 tech wise

I know there's a thread in gaming but this is a different crowd and I'm sure will look at it from a different angle.
What is there tech wise that interested you from this year's E3? Personally the thing that's fascinated me most is this story from engadget:
Remember that rumor a couple years back of PS3 motion control gaming being based around a pull-apart DualShock 3? Well, perhaps it wasn't such a wild idea after all. No DualShock 3s have been harmed in the making of Move, but Joystiq has just confirmed that you can actually use the existing controller for Move gaming instead of springing for the Navigation Controller if you'd like. Obviously, you'll be one-handing the DualShock, not quite as comfortable as the Move's tiny, dedicated quasi-nunchuck, but it saves you $30 for your hassle. You'll only have access to the d-pad or four face buttons, depending on which side you choose, but interestingly, the Nav Controller's X and O buttons are redundant with the full Move wand, so hopefully this won't impact gameplay too greatly.
Basically you can hold a normal PS3 controller in a weird way and it will be an adequate substitute for the move wand. I really can't imagine how that'd work since the move (and wiimote) have things on the end which lets them point at things on the screen, without that all you have is a jazzed up accelerometer.
Any thoughts?

The "Navigation wand" is nothing the like the main move controller. It isn't motion sensitive.

OIC. So you still need the wand thing?

Yeh, the Navigation controller is simply an add on to go with the move. Its kinda like the Wii's Nunchuck except it isn't motion sensitive.
My fav of the conference was by far the 3DS!
i think tech wise, kinect. But at the minute, its useless. It is the beginning of future gaming imo, but is far away from being used for core gamers. Once you have something which can read where you want to go, without the use of controllers (take Gamer, the movie, for example) then that is where this tech will come into use

Yeh I agree. Kinect looks alright, but I'm not willing to give up my controller just yet.

I'm williing to give up the controller slightly, but it will never dissapear fully. The lag between actions and their processing and then their display is quite long (100-150ms) especially when Move is only around 28ms (iirc) - MS should have took the path of the original console and be willing to make a loss (not saying they aren't already) in order to attract more people, a seperate processor was disregarded for the Kinect itself due to cost reasons but a small ARM processor inside the Kinect unit itself could have maybe made all the difference.
I'm confused by Move, I'm not sure whether I should love it or hate it. People are calling it "the Wii done right" but to me that's all it really is, a replication of the Wii. I can't really say much more about it since I don't know anything else!

Agreed. It's funny how Sony and Microsoft are always fighting it out, when Nintendo just comes waltzing in and shows them how to really do it. Nintendo brought in motion-sensitivity into the console world, then Sony followed... Makes you wonder when Microsoft and Sony will bring out another feature that was obviously thought up because Nintendo used the initiative first :P
Nothing really amazed me other than the 3DS. Kinect and Move aren't that amazing. 3D gaming is new, Kinect and Move aren't new in a concept sense :/

I know what you are saying but Microsoft and Sony can make such things work. The Nintendo Wii needs an update tbh!
The Kinect looks cool and so does the Move, be interesting what they are really like!

I'm really not in to this new motion capturey tech. I want to just sit down and play my games. The wii was stupid and this will be stupid.

I am not a fan of kinect whatsoever. I can just about accept Move and the wii because you have something to hold so you can actually pretend you're swinging a sword or w/e, just pretending to swing one without anything in your hand feels very childish though.

And holding a little piece of plastic makes you feel like a true samurai? :)
I'm not a gamer at all, but I'm extremely glad that this sort of technology is making its way into the mainstream.
Kinect seems much more user friendly and functional. From the tiny bit I've read about Move, it sounds like it needs a lot of improvement before it can compete with Kinect.
Of course, until I use both of them I can't really comment, but Kinect seems to be the superior tech.

It seems likely to be more immersive than having nothing in your hand whatsoever :)
I agree Kinect seems to be the superior tech though, i just heard it has motors that follow you around the room if you move. Very cool. The eyetoy that goes with the PS move doesn't have that!

Face tracking you mean? Not to say anything bad, but webcams have had that for donkeys years

If you can scan items to use as a weapon, for example a stick for a sword, then that'll eliminate feeling stupid holding nothing.

But you still wouldn't get the feedback, sound or precision of the Wiimote, no?
when kinect transforms into that off gamer will it truly be worthwile.

I am much more in to, putting this bluntly, sitting on my arse playing with controller, not using too much energy, talking to friends?
If I want to run around acting like a mug I would go to a gym, or play football.
I don't wan to pretend to play football, or to pretend to drive a car (when I can use a go kart or a crappy old car..), and if I am being honest I don't particularly want to pretend to be holding a sword.
what do i think
i think xbox is a generation ahead

Explain, considering the 360 is the oldest of the 3.

Hunt him down and put him to trial :@
Kinect and Move are okay if with friends - nothing is more fun than being a berk with others :P But controllers are for one-to-one gaming or multiplayer, in my opinion. The Wii kinda mixes the two together, motion sensitivity and controllers, but it is admittedly the oldest of the consoles to have this sort of functionality and it would need a bit of update (the Wii Motion + or whatever was getting there).
